Jay-Z & Beyonce Move to Trademark Blue Ivy's Name

Beyonce and Jay-Z Move to Trademark Their Baby's Name

Superstar couple may launch Blue Ivy Carter line of products

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to protect the name of their infant daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. The new parents have plans to reserve their child's name for possible use as a brand name for a line of baby-related products, including carriages, diaper bags and baby cosmetics. Yes, baby cosmetics are apparently a real thing.

The superstar couple were forced to act quickly in protecting the name after fashion designer Joseph Mbeh submitted an application to trademark "Blue Ivy Carter NYC" on January 11th, only four days after the child was born. A second applicant attempted to claim "Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV" for a line of fragrances on January 20th. Both claims were denied, as the Trademark Office recognized that the name belong to the instantly famous infant. Mbeh later issued a statement claiming that he had planned to pitch a line of products to Jay-Z and Beyoncé, and had no intention of ripping them off.

The stars' application, made through Beyoncé's company BGK Trademark Holdings, is pending but is almost certain to be made official, as parents are legally authorized to trademark the names of their minor children.

Not surprised. I'm sure that Joseph Mbeh guy wasn't the only one thinking about how to cash in on baby Blue.

Actually they are smart as hell-this child is the most famous baby in the world and no one has even seen her yet. If anybody has the right to profit from her name it should be her parents and no one else. The proposed baby products also ensures that baby Blue will never be broke-she will have her own fortune. Very smart parents-now let's see the baby lol

Not really-it's about preventing people from doing unscrupulous(spelling lol ) shit with their child's name. There are folks who do far worse things to children that can be considered true exploitation. As we have read there have already been at least a few attempts to cash in on baby Blue-her parents are just protecting her name and financial future.

Why am I not surprised neutral

And, sad to say, that there will be a lot of children running around with Blue Ivy clothing and accessories.

It's clear from that article 2 people have already tried to trademark the child's name. So why can't the actual Parents ? The little one will be set for life and if people wanna call that exploiting, shrug

I say raise your child and do what you feel is right in your own household.

According to the article Bey-Jay were "forced to act quickly" to file a trademark for Blue Ivy's name to stop others from trying to profit off her name. But surely Bey & Jay arent the only Hollywood couple to have to deal with ppl trying to profit off their baby's name. Surely this has happened to other H'wood couples as well, and I'm interested in knowing how they dealt with a situation like this. This is the first time I've ever read about a celebrity couple trademarking their baby's name. hmmm

I agree but people can also give their opinion on something as well... People post and people reply. Just because its an not so favorable responce doesnt make anyone pressed here because to be honest alot more people than you think dont even know the name of their child or could care less lol lol

I dont really care either way but I just wanted to comment on people suggesting B and Jay should profit off their own child...

Im sure their is a way they can stop people from trademarking the name without them exactly making money off their own child as well. To me, thats not really a good look but to each is own. I wouldnt want to pimp my own child for money.

There is a difference between protecting your own versus seizing an opportunity to make profit off something yourself which I see in this case but I am sure people will come in here and argued that this is not the first time this has been done and blah blah blah to make excuses for Beyonce and Jay Z when in reality they do shit like this to get people talking and to make money...watever same ol shit.

And good grief will mods make a Beyonce sticky already this has gotten way overboard now....Its obvious people here like talking about her. There is almost two Beyonce threads every week. I dont see why their cant be a sticky on her.. It will help un clog the flow of threads and people who want to talk about her can.

She's their baby so it really doesn't matter what we think. But truth be told I think they are just protecting their baby and if they choose to make a baby line it's their business.

How so?

For the most part except for a few exceptions all Michaels threads stay in HIS sticky... I dont agree with a Bey stickey either but I am just suggesting it based on the massive threads Bey always gets here which I find ridiculous in itself but at least it would be more organize and the people who WANT to talk to about her can simply go in HER STICKY instead of clogging all the other threads in the main section that folks have to sort through who dont want to talk about her on a constant basis.

Then they should make an all out sticky for madonna, elton and many others lol when MJ passed away it got to the point of locking all related threads-the jackson 5 threads, his kids, hell even threads about joe were locked! It was ridiculous! At what point does it stop? Do we include Jay-z threads? Even though he is a completely separate artist. Do we include solange threads? Cuz her big sister will always be mentioned lol it can get stupid after awhile.

I agree with this especially the bolded parts. Wanting to stop people from trying to profit off their baby girl's name is one thing, but actually trademarking her name with plans of releasing a Blue Ivy line of baby products is another thing. disbelief I really dont think they needed to trademark her name to protect it because:

.....A second applicant attempted to claim "Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV" for a line of fragrances on January 20th. Both claims were denied, as the Trademark Office recognized that the name belong to the instantly famous infant.

So since the Trademark Office denied those two claims on her name they wouldnt have been able to proceed with their plans anyways. Anyone else wanting to submit a claim on Blue Ivy's name would have probably been denied as well. They are not the first or only celeb couple to have people trying to profit off the name of their newborn baby. How the other celeb couples probably dealt with it was to let the Trademark Office and their lawyers handle it versus putting a trademark on the baby's name. But this is probably all a clever PR gimmick to keep their names in the press.

There are stars who have had kids way later on in life than he did, Stevie, Quincey Jones, Ronald Isley, James Brown. I see what you're saying but this is nothing new in the entertainment world. The kid will be alright. wink

Celebrity children fall under a different category than normal kids. While nobody is trying to make money off Shanequa Jones or Elysian Meadow Flower Worthington, people see money opportunities when little Bey-Jays and Cruises are born. A little Jolie's name can fetch a pretty penny off of a website registration alone.

Exactly!

I know that their bullshit will continue until the end of time but I guess I am tired of people making dumb excuses for it like people were born yesterday. I know people are dumb but not everyone in the world are THAT dumb confused

But see theres a DIFFERENCE here... Michael had passed away so their was alot of news about him and it made since to make a sticky and their are ALOT of MJ fans here who like discussing Michaels MUSIC not just on personally life matters related to him versus Beyonce.

Now you know as much as I do Beyonce is talked about alot more than Madonna and Elton on here and the only reason why they have been talked about lately is because of the Superbowl and Golden Globe fiasco..

If I would suggest another sticky I would also suggest Janet because alot of posters like discussing her music as well, for me I personally do.

The thing with Beyonce is well at least on here nobody discusses her music... which is really a no brainer... people are pressed on posting every little news topic on her in the media which is annoying... yes their should be a sticky just for her since people care about that more than discussing better artists and their MUSIC.

No what IS stupid is more threads on bullshit instead music or good artists that make good music.. I cant get over someone had the nerve to question why D angelo was so popular on here... WTF? eek
