Is Madonna's Immaculate Collection the greatest ever "Greatest Hits album"?

I am in the opinion it is, no truly amazing songs are left out. With a track list like this

1. Holiday music

2. Lucky Star music

3. Borderline rainbow

4. Like a Virgin sexy

5. Material Girl bananadance

6. Crazy For You pray

7. In to the Groove dancing jig

8. Live to tell love

9. Papa don't Preach worship

10. Open ur heart worship

11. La Isla Bonita boxed

12. LIKE A PRAYER excited excited excited

13. Express yourself thumbs up!

14. Chreish angel

15. Vogue horny

16. Justify my Love whip boff2 sperm

17. Rescue Me fit

I mean oh my God, Like a Virgin, Material girl are early classics. Some will say Live to Tell and La Isla Bonita are weaker than the others, but a torch ballad (About the most fucked marriage in history) seems bittersweet when she is whining away about how much she loved a guy who stuck her head in an oven and La Isla Bonita is poppy. Like a Prayer is probably her greatest ever song, video and album. And the new songs, well Justify my Love (Even without the er.. Video) is worth the purchase price alone. Plus theres the hi helium early disco songs at the start, Borderline does sound like Minnie Mouse on helium (The level of maturity increases tenfold between a girlie song like Lucky Star and Like a Prayer). And then there is the fabulously gay themed Vogue.

I dont think GHV2 came even close (I actually prefer something to remember more).

Who else loves this album and also realises that unlike a lot of other complimations theres no filler or really weak new songs on it. (Donna Summer's is a close second).

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

YES! Except for the fact the number one hit Who's That Girl was left out. But then an EP album called "The Holiday Collection" came out around the same time with the same cover design but in burgundy which includes Who's That Girl, Holiday and several more songs. I have it.

A subjective topic, but....IC has a good claim to it.

I would also suggest 1. A great compilation, it summized the Beatles' run in #1 singles which captured all the different sonic segments of their run without ignoring any because of disc space because they only had hits for 7 years, and all their #1s were so good. Sure it's main flaw is omitting "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Please Please Me," but otherwise it tells you something that it allegedly became the best-selling album of the 2000s.

God knows how many kids got into the Beatles because of that record.

lol at kids getting into the Beatles cause of 1. Doesn't beat the Red album and Blue album, I don't even remember All My Loving being on 1. I actually bought it for my dad to play in the car, cause he has the albums with the early hits on record, though I think now I have them somewhere.

Immaculate Collection sold so much over the years, it outdid the best sellers of 1990

The Immaculate Collection definitely has the claim of being one of the greatest compilations ever compiled, but I don't think it beats this one:

I had it dubbed on a cassette for years and since I have all her albums in original CD format already, I have Immaculate Collection burned on CD. Those Like a Prayer and Express Yourself mixes are killer, and I even have the Vinyl single.

My first Madonna album was Like a Virgin in the 80's on record and first CD was Something to Remember, and then I kept updating. I only cared about having my favourite music videos of hers on tape as a kid until I got around to buying the albums.

Regarding The Immaculate Collection, am I the only one who prefers some of the Q-sound mixes on this compilation over the original mixes (i.e. "Like A Virgin")?

All My Loving wasn't a #1. That's why it wasn't on it.

1 has one thing over Red/Blue albums, among others: It's only 1 CD, i.e. much cheaper.

Plus I always resented how...which one was it that pretty much snubbed George from that era of the early days?

Totally ignores the reality that many fans become fans because of compilations.

With MJ and Janet, first it was the music videos, then HIStory and DOAD leading to checking out the other albums for songs not on the compilations and falling in love with THOSE album cuts and the rest is history.

And it also ignores the fact that many greatest hits/best of compilations contain new/unreleased music that any "true" fan would want.

Madonna's albums are TRASH so yes, her greatest hits could be in fact be the greatest due to it being all about the singles which she undeniably made hits. Who wants a shitty album when they can just get the hits and vogue away? lol lol lol lol

Prince = WIND
Chaka Khan = FIRE

Playboy Original

Exactly, Madonna's albums are quite uneven, alot of filler and some hits although Like a Virgin, True Blue and Like a Prayer have hardly any. Also too some people just want to hear hits rather than just scrolling through the complex filler that clogs Madonna Albums (American life and I'm Breathless for instance). Besides artists rely on Greatest Hits complimations for attracting album sales off fair weather fans. Okay I am not mega hardcore Madonna, mainly as I can not afford the cost of her back catalogue like many people and also at 35 I am no longer worried about whether I am a true fan (This is a barb at some one else, not you Playboy) or not. I left the insecurity of my teens years ago.

I just think they (Warner Sire) did a great job of assembling her greatest Hits on to one disc.

it's a good compilation but I don't like what they did to "Into The Groove" and "Like A Prayer".

Regardless of whether you like the artists or not, the following were brilliantly compiled and brilliantly sequenced and would all serve as great introductions to the artist for new fans.

It is one of the best singles collections in pop history, no question. Even though it regrettably leaves out some major singles (the #1 "Who's That Girl, most notably), I wouldn't argue with anything that is included.

Of course, the solution may have been to simply do a 2-CD set:

Disc 1

1. Everybody

2. Burnin' Up

3. Holiday

4. Borderline

5. Lucky Star

6. Like a Virgin

7. Material Girl

8. Dress You Up

9. Angel

10. Crazy for You

11. Gambler

12. Into the Groove

13. Live to Tell

14. Papa Don't Preach

15. True Blue

16. La Isla Bonita

Disc 2

1. Open Your Heart

2. Where's the Party?

3. Who's That Girl

4. Causing a Commotion

5. The Look of Love

6. Spotlight

7. Like a Prayer

8. Express Yourself

9. Cherish

10. Oh Father

11. Keep it Together

12. Vogue

13. Hanky Panky

14. Sooner or Later

15. Justify My Love

16. Rescue Me

* * *

Not that "Legend" is bad by any means, but it has to be the most overrated greatest hits ever. Once I heard "Babylon by Bus" and "Live in Chicago" all the studio material became incredibly "meh." I'd actually recommend those as starting points over Legend.

it's a pretty great one, but it being mixed in Q-sound is completely pointless. worse, that the songs were remixed by Shep Pettibone (some of them drastically) holds it back for me.

but it's an extremely enjoyable listen and other than that, it's great. even at this point, she already had too many hits to fit on there (with the 2 new songs), so that bona fide hits like Dress You Up, True Blue and Who's That Girl are missing.
