He's my mother's fave! When I first heard this song, I thought it was done by Ray.

Yep. If anybody is deserving of an Unsung episode it's DEFINITELY this man!
People will always associate him with "Ghostbusters" but he's done so much more, and even so much BETTER than that song.

How the hell is the singer of one of the biggest hits of the 80's unsung? Space for sale...

Not sure, but i guess he did good business by selling his Ameraycan Studio to Paramount
Ameraycan Recording Studi... Hollywood

It's a good thing ole Ray never took a serious stab at acting. Do any of you remember seeing his acting debut on Gimme A Break? "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

He was unsung in the '90s onwards.

His efforts are overlooked by most of the masses. They like to write him off because of "Ghostbusters." **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Yeah,it's a shame that he's mostly remembered (by the mainstream) for that song. The four albums he did with Raydio are classics, imo.

Usually when it's someone real R&B famous in the '70s or '80s or whatever, they are usually written off after a certain period so in that sense, they do become forgotten about. Some people are on the show because no one in either pop or R&B circles really gave them any props for anything.

Particularly his solo music. It's like Ghostbusters was his death bell much like Foreigner with I Want to Know What Love Is although he did bounce back somewhat with I Don't Think That Man Should Sleep Alone. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

Off thread but it's funny you mentioned the Foreigner ballad. While today it's seen as one of the greatest ballads of all time, it did seem like a death knell for Foreigner (though they continued to have some success afterwards). Lou Gramm originally didn't wanna record it from what I heard. I always think had Ray not done "Ghostbusters", he could've been taken more seriously than he did after that song.

Very true. The sad part is that he really could have continued to record in the 90s, but from what I understand, he took time off because his parents were ill and he wanted to take care of them.
Does anyone know if he's still touring? I know he did last year to promote his last cd he released independently. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

lol..There's Ray Parker Jr BEFORE "Ghostbusters" and AFTER. Some cats I know laugh when I mention that he used to be an accomplished/in demand session guitarist. I guess when he got caught up in the "Billy Dee-isms" those days out the window.
I remember seeing him on the Grammy's performing the hit with his dangling earring and his hair (or wig) a mile above his head. That's when I knew it was pretty much over for him.
Does anyone remember the name of the video of him where he pulls a "Prince" and plays everything? I think it was from 81 or 82?

As part of Stu Gardner's "First Cosins Jazz Ensemble" (1977). One year after that, Ray started releasing work with Raydio. Stu later composed the Cosby Show's theme.

Ray co-wrote this hit single with Chaka Khan from the band Rufus' 1974 album Rags To Rufus.

I think he also did the guitar solo on this song too... sounds like his style. Still love his work on Stevie's song:

"You See The Trouble With Me". Written by Ray and the late Maestro Barry White.

"Maybe Your Baby" is actually Jeff Beck. But Ray plays smooth guitar too.

You sure? I know he was on "Lookin' for Another Pure Love" but I kept reading over and over that Ray played on "Maybe".
