Re evaluating Madonna... as a "Performer" Okay so... since watching Madonnas Halftime show I have trickled into some unfamiliar territory that I never thought I would dare to visit.
I just didnt want to believe that Madonna has soley remained relevant on being a smart business woman alone. To be honest, their are a few Madonna songs that I do like mostly from 80s and some early 90s which I think is some of her best works. So I looked at alot of old footages of her concerts and some choregraphy she has done in them.
I have came to the unbiased conclusion that I have mis judged Madonna to an extent as a performer in some aspects in her past performances. I guess I did pre-judge before looking for myself and I never really looked at alot of her 90s performances. While that Superbowl performance was horrible to the highest degree from a performer and stage presence point of view, I am going to give the excuse for that as old age because looking at old concert footages Madonna exactly had alot of stage presence and while she never was a GREAT dancer... she has in the past did pretty well with the choregraphy pieces in her shows.. and when I say pretty well... Im speaking a slot above average in SOME of the concert footages not all. I still think their are other better dancers such as Janet for example but stating she has shown to at least be on time and precise compared to that Superbowl performance.
When looking at alot of the footages I was exactly kind of impressed speficially with her "Girlie Show" tour. It was very creative all around from a music, stage presence and the type of choregraphy pieces being used. I was impressed with her stage presence and how natural she seemed in some of the pieces. Now obviously, they were mimed.. I think one of them wasnt though but it still was a very entertaining show. Once again, I am not a huge Madonna fan and still find her to be overrated but I guess I have a new perspective on why alot of people like her or at least some of her material and have seen another side of her by digging for these footages. She of course has alot of great productions but during her prime she did have alot of stage presence and was creative with her performances.
I think being a smart business woman has helped her stayed relevant currently but during her prime she was entertaining live and even had some good tracks if I dare to mention.
Ive watched this over and over and over... again This has been my fav out of all of them. I thought this was such a creative rendition, amusing and entertaining new twist on Like a Virgin. Singing the song from a male perspective... interesting.
I exactly didnt realize the points you guys was making when some of the opinions suggested Madonna always incorporated new things in her old songs in her shows compared to Michael and Janet and now I do see it...Although seeing it and appreciating it, I still think those comparisions should not have been made :-cause their all different
One of her better times where she does a good job with some intricate choregraphy. Check out the intro portion then scroll to 4:09
I think with this performance she clearly rips off Janet and Michael with the military inspired movements and theme. With this performance you can see how average she is as a dancer with the choregraphy but I liked this particular piece because I like the mixes they did to Holiday.
I dont think she is one of the greatest or best performers ever (yea she is definitly overrated in that regard for sure)... but I did find her to be entertaining particularly during this era. And once again compared to her current performances 00s.. their was alot more energy, precision, natural stage presence than what we see now.
