Write Me Back album - May 22. NA! Kelly is not a top tier type of guy. I mean, you can't really deny his work ethic, vocal abilities, and track record, but this guy has gotten heavily spotty with his albums. Love Letter got in my good graces solely because he was inspired again. Even though some of the tracks sounded like a slight reprise to the sound of "Step In The Name Of Love," I really felt that Kelly had improved songwriting-wise. But judging from the stuff he's dropped since then, Write Me Back is gonna be another meh release. Trust me. I'm sick of it. The man is nearly approaching 50 and it's sad really. Let's get some real musicians in Kelly, please! [Edited 2/8/12 21:32pm] [Edited 2/8/12 21:33pm] Check me out and add me on:

Write Me Back is a retro album like Love Letter but it's 70's/80's inspired.
I'd like for him to work with real musicians too but he has been doing the whole "written, produced, all instruments, arranged, etc. by R. Kelly" thing since he started that I don't think we'll ever see him working with actual musicians. He would be so much better if he actually had an orchestra or full band. Even with live performances he prefers to have a DJ or the back-up instrumental playing.

Which has been his killer in recent times because his playing and production is poor. Plus, he limits himself to crappy MIDI Keyboards and MPC sample machines which most anybody can do, he doesn't express his skills in keys much at all.
Love Letter was a step in the right direction, but it still sounds plastic and a cheap imitation of the real thing. Write Me Back's 1st single is awful. It, just like 90% of his stuff now days, is so predictable and repetitive.
He needs major teaching and inspiration, but regardless, i oddly root for this man. He's took a correct step, he'll now go backwards again as normal, much to my disappointment.
Maybe he should watch a real deal like D'angelo, the "RnB jesus", someone Kelly won't even be able to get near the aura of never mind his level, hence learn from him. Maybe go back and study different legends other than Stevie and Gaye. [Edited 2/9/12 7:35am] [Edited 2/9/12 7:39am] This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

That's not true. R. Kelly is a good producer and he can play the piano/keyboard well. He does have a band perform the instruments on his songs and he arranges but I'd much prefer if he got a full studio band. I'm talking strings, trumphets -- the whole nine. That's what we're discussing, not R. Kelly's production skill.
How does "Share My Love" sound like of new stuff? It's totally different from his previous and unexpected from him.
D'Angelo is nobody's "R&B Jesus" nor could he touch R. Kelly with a 50 feet pole. I swear, this is the only forum that overrates him and think so highly of him. Outside - he's a nobody.

I said Kelly doesn't express his skills in keys, meaning he can play but doesn't show it. Kelly does shine more live, but even there he has a few problems. His 2010 Soul Train opener was borderline great.
Share My Love is EXACTLY like something we hear all the time. Why? Because other than a few styles of song, Kelly has been singing two or three long songs with almost identical melodies and hooks. How about a complicated production with limited to no melody to challenge oneself like, say, i don't know, D'Angelo does?
I can predict a Kelly hook because it'll be the title of the song repeated over and over in a descending melody.
It is 100% not unexpected of him, that's almost as unexpected as that D'Angelo comment. Unexpected is releasing an album of modern soul with great musicianship with modern twists maintaining dignity, and then following it up with an album devoid of melody or hooks and revolves around an artistic and groundbreaking concept like, say, i don't know, D'Angelo with his transition from Brown Sugar to Voodoo.
And then live.....Kelly is good, but again not challenging. You gotta be these things if you want to be a master. He just follows another formula, but does it well. Again, nothing on the surface wrong with that, but if you want to be a master, you gotta switch it up! Turn one of your slow soul classics into a James Brown/Prince/Mplsound funk-athon or an RnB groove into a slow gospel blues or a modern funk jam into heavy rock like, say, i don't know, D'Angelo with Brown Sugar, Shit, Damn, Motherfucker and Devil's Pie.
Maybe some challenging covers no one would expect and make them your own like, say, i don't know, D'Angelo with Space Oddity or She's Always In My Hair.
Kelly, believe me, i know all his stuff, is absolutely nothing compared to the unbelievable talents of D'Angelo, a real RnB king. But that's not the point....because i root for him because he could be great at best and carries with him an unbelievable voice....but he chooses to self brag, sing about remixes from the kitchen, player cards, closets, feelin on bootys and then singing the cheesiest songs known to man ala Fly, Let your light shine, Spirit, Africa, I Wish and all them other "epic" songs that sound exactly the same. This is very true, Kelly has skills on the keys. But why he chooses just a few chords & that constant raindrop R&B beat is annoying at times
I remember when he did A Womans Threat, that was a good example of something a little different. And showed a little more of his key skills....
Plus another thing is his subjects as you said, i personally am tired of the let's lay naked girl, gonna bump n gridn ya all night & make love type stuff. He has been on that since 1991 Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

That doesn't even make sense. Have you ever seen R. Kelly play the piano live? Most likely not. He's not the type of performer to sit behind a piano and his songs require more movement. BUT there's a performance of him playing the piano while singing "I Look To You" on Youtube and I've also heard his version of "A Song for You" just Kelly and a piano. He's a great musician and I'd actually like to see that side of him more but he seems more comfortable with walking around stage with a mic in hand and singing.
D'Angelo is a mediocre "talent". He's no one's "King" and the only people hyping him up is this forum. He's D-O-N-E. A true King maintains their talent and success like Kelly. While others fall off and cling on to their music of yester-year. What's up with people on this forum fantasizing over performers who have flopped into oblivion and are no longer relevant? Let it go already.
In conclusion, you deviated from the initial topic at hand and attempted to make this a R. Kelly vs. D'Angelo debate and failed miserably. Good day. [Edited 2/9/12 12:05pm]

Also how could you say R. Kelly isn't a challenging live performer while going up for the poor version of Prince that still rocks a bandana and wife beater? Stop.
He could never do this: | |

Oh dear, so much to say. Some of your response feels like a joke. I could respond constructively, but it's clear you're too into it to handle constructive criticism on a flawed RnB artist. I mentioned D'angelo in a sarcastic manner after you insanely snubbed him off in favour of someone who sings about lions on mountain tops....at the same time i was pointing out the eclipse in talent D has over R. You challenged it, i just suggested an idea originally.
As i said, i could respond, but i'd be copy and pasting my above posts. I do find it kind of endearing that someone thinks so highly of someone who sings about girls reminding him of inanimate objects i.e. jeeps, remote controls or bumpers....
When Kelly has stopped singing the same three songs, keeps going forward instead of back and forth, actually does something challenging, artistic, innovative or not plastic sounding, you know, something that should qualify for you to be a RnB "king" - come at me again.
In the mean time, keep thinking Share My Love is a brand new melody by R....and something he's never done before lol.
All this and you failed to see how i actually like the man and was offering constructive criticism. He's a very flawed artist, there's many more better and i pointed that out.
Happy people! Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Happy people! Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [Edited 2/9/12 18:03pm] This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

Honestly, I don't see the point on going back and forth with someone who has their mind set already. I will just say again - D'Angelo is a has-been and you only brought him up to bait. He's a nobody and should never be mentioned in the same sentence with R. Kelly. Maybe, if this was 1998 I would entertain it but this we're in 2012. R. Kelly is prepping another album and already has a single doing well. While the other is just nostalgic act.
Anyway, the initial conversation between me and silverchild was perfectly fine without your bashing. If you want to know what "constructive criticism" is then look at his post. If you want to know what baiting and trolling is then look at your own.

I have my mind set because you in no way have challenged it. I could say the same to you. D's a has been? Better check reactions to his shows. I brought him up as an idea. Kelly ridiculously hails himself as the greatest in RnB (and we all know that if you have to tell us....you probably ain't lol) and yet he releases shit more so than not...and seeing how D's back and getting rave reactions and doing things that are jaw dropping live with full amazing band, indicating a return to the top as the new songs sound like yet another progression, i thought Kelly could learn a thing or two....not rocket science is it. Yeah, both R and D are prepping a new album...let's see how each get treated shall we.
How is D a nostalgic act when he's performing no songs the same as the album version (i pointed that out in a before post) and that when he says he's going to perform a new song the crowd goes nuts, hmm? Plus, let us not forget the covers he makes his own. If you want to stop the D'Angelo talk, stop saying absurd shit about him.
Also, why 1998? only R had an album out then. Learn the artist before you criticise....and if you're trying to insinuate the R. album Vs Brown Sugar, i'd LOVE that! R. has no chance.
Of course the conversation was fine, because no one criticised your idol who likes to sing about braiding hair until i came along. My post was constructive, you cried.
Now, i will wait for Write Me Back with hope and i'll gladly post my joy if he does something great....as that is what i want....but i'll also say the opposite if it's shite like Share My Love.
Now once again, let us sing some challenging R. Kelly! - "Step in the name of love, step in the name of love, step in the name of love, step in the name of love, step in the name of love, step in the name of love, step in the name of love, step in the name of love"
ugh, let's try another as i seem to be saying the same thing over and over - "You're my number one hit, my number one hit, my number one hit, my number one hit, my number one hit, my number one hit, my number one hit"
Ugh, nope same thing, next - "Imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that, imagine that,"
*sigh* Sorry, one second - "Last night i touched a dream, touched a dream, touched a dream, touched a dream, touched a dream, touched a dream, touched a dream, touched a dream, touched a dream, touched a dream,"
I'm really sorry about this - "Prayer changes, prayer changes, prayer changes, prayer changes, prayer changes, prayer changes things. Prayer changes, prayer changes, prayer changes, prayer changes, prayer changes..."
I really don't know what's come over me here - "I believe, i believe, i believe oh, i believe, i believe, i believe oh, i believe, i believe, i believe oh, i believe, i believe, i believe oh, i believe, i believe, i believe oh, i believe, i believe, i believe oh."
Oh mother of god! - "Can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it"
I'm making this up, surely!? - "You made me love you, babe, made me love you, babe, made me love you, babe, made me love you, babe, made me love you, babe, you made me love you, babe, made me love you, babe, made me love you, babe, made me love you, babe, made me love you, babe, you made me love you, babe, made me love you, babe.,."
................... - "You saved me, you saved me, you saved me, you saved me, you saved me, you saved me, you saved me, you saved me, you saved me, you saved me, you saved me, you saved me, you saved me"
................... - "I surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender, i surrender"
................... - "When I think about you, when i think about you, when i think about you, when i think about you, when i think about you, when i think about you, when i think about you, when i think about you, when i think about you, when i think about you."
I did not make any of these "hooks" up.
I could go on too....but, i've gone into a more unconstructive environment here.....but it's funny as shit, ain't it?

Must of missed this.
As nice as that tribute is....what in the name of RnB Jesus is challenging about it!? It's R. predictably covering Sam Cooke!
D'Angelo is covering the likes of David Bowie....that's challenging. LOL.
Never be able to do it?! lmao i'd rather watch Raphael Saadiq do original tracks in this form better whilst maintaining excellent self production. D would be able to do this, but he would do something different...and, you know, challenging and put a whole new spin on it and make it his own.
Come on, what the hell are you thinking?

The irony!
and at your long ass rant. Seek help and FYI, R. Kelly has never hailed himself as "The Greatest in R&B", the public has and that's why you're mad.
R. Kelly's cover of Sam Cooke garnered rave reviews. While D'Angelo most likely ruined the David Bowie classic. He ruined a Prince classic so I wouldn't want to hear how he messed up David Bowie's song.
The R. album shits on anything that D'Angelo ever released. It sold more, garnered more acclaim and has classics that are still listened to today.
Um, I'm starting to believe you have a mental problem. Maybe, you're slow...
He's nostalgic act because he's only thought of in past tense. The crowd is going "nuts" because they paid money to see this nostalgic act and he's performing news songs. Hasn't he been on crack on hiatus for like 10 years? Yeaaa. Put two and two together. Besides there was no point in bringing that up but I guess you have to make your fave look good some how. I'm not going to bring up how R. Kelly sells out shows all the time and has everyone screaming. There's no point.
Of course the conversation was fine, because no one criticised bashed your idol who likes to sing about braiding hair until i came along. My post was constructive trolling, you dragged.
Fixed.
Now, i will wait for Write Me Back with hope
Yup! Like the true stan you are. I've noticed that it's always the ones that bash him that are the first waiting in line for his music. Funny.
I think i've made my points
All I see is a long ass rant of you defending D'Angelo and demeaning R. Kelly - no points.
Nobody cares about how much you think a has-been like D'Angelo is good. Go write a book about it. I don't get how he's even relevant to the conversation between me and silverchild.
Here's some advice if you don't like R. Kelly - then stay out of his threads. It will save you from rising blood pressure and typing up rant posts like you did above. I seriously don't understand the fascination that people on this board have with typing up long posts about artists/celebs they don't care for. You must live a miserable life.

Lawdy, lawdy.
Because you have lowered yourself to insults, a sign of defensive defeat, not commented on those shocking Kelly songs i quoted and furthermore haven't discredited my points in any regard, because you can't, i'll leave it there.
Also, because my replies would echo what i have already said. So i'll leave your own "long ass rant" to talk for me.
I find it funny when someone uses the cloak of the internet to insult someone they never met.

"‘Let me remind you that I am the king of R&B.’ So singeth R. Kelly, near the end of his thumping, piano-driven hit, ”I’m a Flirt (Remix),” which just might be the most pleasurable song on the radio. It’s an unnecessary boast: Who could possibly argue, or forget?" - The New York Times, 2007.
