That's part of why feel it's greater and more important than the Madonna album.

It's the essential Bob Marley, and it's only Bob Marley album that millions of fans of his will ever buy. I can't think of many artists of his calibre who are so focused into one single collection.

I generally don't think of that as a good thing, although these days the same could be said for ABBA and Queen but not to the extent of Bob Marley because people still do buy their studio albums.

It really says to me that he didn't even have a well known body of work that the general public gave enough of a crap about until some of the singles were put together as a collection in the 1980s.

Then again I'm arguing my point of view as someone who almost controversially thinks he was bloody rubbish!

lol okay

But even if what you're saying is true, then then Legend compilation established him as a mainstream star and put him in every dorm room and every fraternity house in the US.

That makes the album very important, even if Bob Marley is less important than Madonna, Abba, Queen (not that he is IMO)

"Black Sweat" is on the The Hits/The B-Sides.

It's a hidden track. You have let to the CD get all the way to the end, then there's 777 blank tracks of silence, then there's a final track number 778, which is 7 hours 7 minutes and 8 seconds long. After this, it'll play all the individual multitracks from "1999: The New Master" one after another. First the drums, then the bass, then the synths, then 25 unused Rosie Gaines harmonies, then the rest of it. After that you get "Black Sweat", the original Grand Central demo from 1975 with Chaz Smith on drums.

True story.

I can't support The Immaculate Collection when it omits "Who's That Girl" and "Causing a Commotion," two fantastic singles IMO. And the remix of "Into the Groove" (my favorite Madonna song at the time and still her '80s apex) is criminally bad.

I think it would definitely be in contention if the compilation included the original single versions of all the hits. Instead they processed everything through Q-Sound and some of the hits are inferior remixes (Express Yourself, Like A Prayer). Also, as some have mentioned, there are some hits that are missing.

Although I like many of Madonna's songs over a thirty year history, I would never call this collection "the greatest collection ever." lol

The "Express Yourself" remix is the definitive version (or a version of it, LOL). My rule of thumb, especially for the '80s/'90s: if there's a remix video, it's acceptable (and usually preferable) to have the remix on the hits collection.

The EY remix is understandable. I prefer it over the original too (though I love the original's use of horns though it might've been too similar to Open Your Heart so I can understand why she gave it a '90s update so to speak). The other remixes though? lol

The definitive version of Express Yourself is the single version - the 7'' Remix - which has only ever been released on the promo CD.

Agreed

However, there's a blog out there where a guy is re-mastering all of the albums and singles chronologically, and even incliding some new, better edits of songs. One of these is for Express Yourself. He's successfully spliced the into and outro of the Local mix to the 7" remix.
It's my new favorite and my go-to version ever since I heard it.

I liked the Beach Boys Sounds of Summer because it pretty much has everything you need from this group, even Kokomo (get your yourself a fruity tropical drink and relax to it!), it's 30 songs, and it was only $8 on itunes and amazon. Summer pool party must-have.

Also, the ABBA collection - I don't think you need to own any individual ABBA albums, you just need this one and you're good.

No, no, 1000 times no! The definitive version is Shep's first remix, either the single's Remix Edit or the video version. That's the version MTV played more, that's the version the radio stations (at least in my area) played more, and that's the definitive version.

"Surf's Up" is sorely missed on this compilation. That would've made it perfect. Of course, Pet Sounds is a must-own album IMO.

I agree about needing the album Pet Sounds, but 30 of their songs for $8 - quite good.

Celebration is better. Putting the songs in remix form ruins it expecially with Like A Prayer. Also some of her biggest hits aren't included I. E: Who's That Girl, Dress You Up

The bolded tracks were his best period. "For LP Fans Only" is my favorite Elvis comp.. only 10 songs, but there's no filler.

To the OP, I disagree, but of course, Madonna is not one of my favorite artists (I am somewhat of a fan). If I was to pick any Madonna comp, though, I'd go with "GHV2", but that's just me - I like 90s Madonna, Prince and MJ over their 80s stuff.

My personal favorite greatest hits album is John Lennon - Lennon Legend, but then of course - he's my favorite artist. His albums were uneven (though I still liked all of them), and this is the one time that a "Very Best Of" actually included all of the artist's best songs.

One or two personal favorites missing, this is still a solid compilation.

Imagine - Instant Karma! - Mother - Jealous Guy - Power To The People - Cold Turkey - Love - Mind Games - Whatever Gets You Thru The Night - #9 Dream - Stand By Me - (Just Like) Starting Over - Woman - Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) - Watching The Wheels - Nobody Told Me - Borrowed Time - Working Class Hero - Happy X-Mas (War Is Over) - Give Peace a Chance

... All on 1 disc. "Mother" into "Jealous Guy" into "Power To The People" is the only problem - poor sequencing there, but otherwise an excellent compilation - perfect for those unfamiliar with his music. I would have added in "I Found Out" and "I Know (I Know)", though those aren't hits, because they're personal favorites, but otherwise - this CD is perfect.

well I'm old enough and it was the 7" remix that garnered most of the airplay when the song was a new single. not the remix. after The Immaculate Collection, that was equally as popular, but mostly because it was 30 seconds shorter and many radio stations replaced their entire Madonna rotation with that album.

the original remix just wasn't that popular on the radio.
