The reason most MJ fans hold his 90s work in such high regard is because it has a much deeper meaning than his 80s work. It is easy to mistake Ghosts as merely a remake of Thriller, due it's similar themes and metaphors. In reality, Ghosts is a thinly veiled account of the events of 1993, from Jackson's point of view.
Jackson's character is persecuted by the villagers in "Normal Valley", for being a "freak" and a danger to the children. It is far more than just another song and dance music video with updated costumes and special effects. It is masterfully shot and highly autobiographical, and your dismissal of it as merely being a retread of Thriller only exposes your own ignorance.
