Prince killed it. Madonna is right to be so nervous for her upcoming show, I am sure she'll be great.... she's no Prince though.

I am not a Janet hater, but I thought her halftime show was terrible, all controversy aside.
Stevie Wonder didn't do his own show, but I seem to remember him doing Sir Duke with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy or something. That is on my highlight reel. My Legacy

Who wrote this?
JT should be lower than MJ.
Prince is fine right where he is, I guess.

I thought Tenth Avenue Freeze-out and Glory Days were highly entertaining (my feelings about the songs aside). Working on a Dream was a given, given that he had a new album to push. I know everybody loves Born to Run, but I was over that at about the age of 19.
My main criticism? Bad hair! Recent days have been much better*:

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM I'm not a huge U2 fan but they are the obvious number 2. Their show was poignant and powerful. Prince is the easy #1 choice, I can't think of a single way his show could have gone better. 2012: The Queen Returns

Billboard needs to STOP smoking crack.. Michael should be HIGHER MUCH HIGHER than Janet...
I like Princes Halftime but find it to be overrated... I thought Michaels was more entertaining.
Michael is number one in my book then Prince comes second..

According to other outlets... Michael is number one as usual... Billboard is full of shit... Janet nor Mcartneys performance deserve to be on that list...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not here for Michael's reductive ass performances with the same ass dance moves and arrangement of songs. Prince gave you something different which is what he ALWAYS does and why he's #1. Stevie Wonder = EARTH
Prince = WIND Chaka Khan = FIRE Sade = WATER the ELEMENTS of MUSIC

Prince pwnd that shit, end of.
Hell, it was epic. As I was watching it I was thinking this was some epic shit that people were gonna keep talking about over the years.

Chile please...
Plenty have named Michael as having the best half time... I dont trust billboard around the corner... they have even named Michael as being number one in halftime and OTHERS as well... so what is your point? Its BILLBOARD
Prince was great, I think Michael was the best though.
I dont like the political games Billboard plays this has nothing to do with Prince before you go into cardiac arrest

Prince's performance was my favorite of all the super bowl shows I watched but personally I didn't think it was anywhere near his best live show
I felt it was too rushed - he had to perform a little bit of everything. And I don't understand why he would open the show with Queen tune, and then carried on with Foo Fighters songs. Too many covers...why? And the twins - they're not bad dancers as orgers say but the choreography was all over the place. Plus Guitar solo for Let's Go Crazy - I personally would've liked it better if he sticked the original version. It was like, Oh here comes the guitar solo! and then after 2 seconds, um, what just happened? And then of course, nothing really mattered as soon as he started playing Purple Rain. What a great, emotional performance!!
MJ - Lip-Synching was expected, but I loved the high energy and his unmistakable dance moves. In a way it's opposite from Paul Mccartney's show, I loved the song Freedom but might as well close my eyes and enjoy the melody, there's nothing really entertaining going on for my eyes And then Heal the World, one of my favorite songs of MJ. Disappointed to see him lip synching to that one again, but I like how he made the whole crowd participate in the performance. Loved the warm, peaceful atmosphere of the show

People don't have much of a long time memory. They had Superbowls in the 1970's too. Carol Channing should get some recognition. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Pretty much, their just choosing the most relevant... 2004/2007 is a bit closer to 2012 than anything before 2000 [Edited 2/4/12 12:42pm]

I watched a little bit of the Dick Clark New Years show this year, and they had some list of the best performances since it began. Most of it seemed to be recent years and acts I didn't know, and few pre-1990's. MJ`s performance was the most historic, he gathered the audience is higher than the game itself, but Prince`s performance was better: live and far more emotional ....

Prince is right at Nr. 1 ! It was the best show ever ! but JT & JJ as Nr2 is just ridiculous & for al MJ Supporters , of course we know in your head he must be everytime in every tings the NR. 1, it doesnt't matter if he had a Lip-Synching Performance... thats why i can't take yr comments serious, if he isn't listet at Nr. 1 - it's such a SCANDALOUS .... RIDICULOUS

I don't even remember Michael's performance that much. I do remember grabbing some snacks when he went into Heal The World though

MJ's performance is totally canned and lipsynched, with stale choreography to boot. He just stands there in that ridiculous pose for the first two minutes like a mannequin. I don't know why he thinks those highwater tuxedo pants are so hot. The only live part is when he speaks on the microphone in his intro to Heal The World. That's when it gets creepy. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

This is just an opinion.. If you google best halftime show and you'll get 10 diffrent answers... like The List: Top 10 Super Bowl halftime shows The Rolling Stones offered a memorable performance during halftime of Super Bowl XL in 2006. (Associated Press) By John Haydon - ShareMadonna, who has sold more than 300 million records, will perform at halftime of the Super Bowl in Indianapolis in collaboration with Cirque du Soleil and Jamie King. The List looks at the top 10 Super Bowl halftime performances of the past.
10. The Rolling Stones, Super Bowl XL; New England Patriots 32, Carolina Panthers 29 (2006) — Using a five-second delay, ABC silenced Mick Jagger’s microphone for a number of suggestive lyrics in two of the band’s three-song set, which included “Start Me Up,” “Rough Justice” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” The 62-year-old frontman looked fit, strutting and dancing across a stage designed as a replica of the band’s famed wagging-tongue logo before an audience of 90 million television viewers.
9. Up With People, Super Bowl XVI; San Francisco 49ers 26, Cincinnati Bengals 21 (1982) — Before Janet Jackson’s X-rated indecent exposure, there was the musical performances of Up With People, who were as inoffensive as puppies eating ice cream and apple pie. This wholesome and upbeat group was best known for their musical performances consisting of hundreds of students. Actress Glenn Close was a former member. They performed at four Super Bowls. At the halftime show for Super Bowl in 1982 the group performed music from the 1960s with a cast of hundreds.
8. Motown review, Super Bowl XXXII; Denver Broncos 31, Green Bay 24 Packers (1998) — This celebration of the 40th anniversary of Motown music, with Boyz II Men, Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves, The Temptations, Queen Latifah, Grambling State University Band, had the Qualcomm Stadium crowd of 68,912 in San Diego rocking and rolling. The Temptations dedicated the song “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)” to the Four Tops who couldn’t attend, while Boyz II Men came up through a trapdoor in the stage floor.
7. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Super Bowl XLII; New York Giants 17, New England Patriots 14 (2008) — At 57, Tom Petty looked a little weathered, and his performance seemed subdued compared to recent halftime shows, but the band put in a solid performance with the songs “I Won’t Back Down,” “Free Fallin’,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream” and “American Girl.” When the stadium lights dimmed for “Free Fallin’,” the crowd held up tiny flashlights that had been distributed previously.
6. Paul McCartney, Super Bowl XXXIX; New England Patriots 24, Philadelphia Eagles 21 (2005) — Determined to avoid controversy after Janet Jackson’s right breast was exposed in the previous MTV-produced halftime show, the NFL went safe with Paul McCartney, who stayed firmly within the bounds of good taste. Mr. McCartney played four songs, opening with “Drive My Car” and closing with “Hey Jude.” Fireworks exploded overhead accompanying “Live and Let Die.”
5. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Super Bowl XLIII; Pittsburgh Steelers 27, Arizona Cardinals 23 (2009) — From the moment Mr. Springsteen and saxophonist Clarence Clemons appeared in silhouette, leaning on each other in the style of 1975’s iconic “Born to Run” cover, it was evident the band planned to hit well-rehearsed marks for its allotted 12 minutes. The set ended with the song “Glory Days.”
4. Diana Ross, Super Bowl XXX; Dallas Cowboys 27, Pittsburgh Steelers 17 (1996) — Diana Ross sang nearly a dozen of her hits in a performance that included four costume changes. She saved the best for last. As she wrapped up her show, the superstar was plucked up and away by a helicopter, which was pretty spectacular — and risky — to the strains of her hit “Take Me Higher.”
3. Michael Jackson, Super Bowl XXVII; Dallas Cowboys 52, Buffalo Bills 17 (1993) — More than 103,000 fans were on hand at the Rose Bowl for Michael Jackson’s dazzling halftime extravaganza, which included a cast of more than 3,500 children. Jackson rocked the place, moonwalking through smoke and blazing pyrotechnics and belting out hits “Billie Jean” and “Black and White.” He closed by singing his new anthem, “Heal the World,” as a plastic globe inflated at center stage and a 750-member choir sang along.
2. Prince, Super Bowl XLI; Indianapolis Colts 29, Chicago Bears 17 (2007) — The reclusive and toned-down Prince put on a sensational show performing hits such as “Let’s Go Crazy,” “We Will Rock You,” “All Along the Watchtower,” and finishing — appropriately enough, as the rain intensified — with “Purple Rain.” Playing on an elaborate stage shaped like the symbol he used to use to refer to himself, he used four guitars and was accompanied by the Florida A&M marching band.
1. U2, Super Bowl XXXVI; New England Patriots 20, St. Louis Rams 17 (2002) — The band U2 delivered an emotional tribute to America and the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The glitz and special effects were limited as the Irish rockers opened with their hit “Beautiful Day.” As the first song wound down, a giant screen scrolled the names of victims in the attacks as Bono sang “Where the Streets Have No Name.” The crowd roared as Bono pulled back his jacket lapel to reveal an American flag.
Dishonorable mention:Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake and others — Super Bowl XXXVIII; New England Patriots 32, Carolina Panthers 29 (2004) — Sadly, the fine performances of Jessica Simpson, Nelly, P. Diddy and Kid Rock were overshadowed by the famous “wardrobe malfunction,” in which Justin Timberlake tore off part of fellow singer Janet Jackson’s costume, exposing her breast just as he was singing, “I’m gonna have you naked by the end of this song.” The incident, which was broadcast to millions of TV viewers worldwide, led to CBS — the broadcaster for that year — being fined $550,000 dollars.
