I don't agree. Jail is just a waste of time. He needs a rehab and he needs to stick to the program.

I know two people who had big drug habits who were in and out of rehab for years! Rehab doesn't work for everyone. They eventually ended up going to prison for several years. If it wasn't for prison, they probably would have ended up in the boneyard. We all heal and learn our lessons differently. It's a hard life, but Prison/jail time can save lives.

James DeBarge -- Janet Jackson's ex-husband -- is locked up after being arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and drug charges. DeBarge -- who was the lead singer of the wildly popular band, El DeBarge -- has been placed in Administrative Segregation -- the place where famous inmates with security issues are housed.

Murray has been calling the Ad Segregation unit home since his conviction on manslaughter charges last November.

We're told they occasionally run into each other, most recently last Monday when they were each meeting with their respective lawyers in the visiting room.

DeBarge's lawyer, Spencer Vodnoy, tells TMZ ... the singer is "really upset" he's so close to Murray. DeBarge says even though he was married to Janet for less than a year back in '84, he thought of Michael as a brother.

Well Michael did talk James down from the roof. James was going to commit suicide and jump off the roof at one time. He's had issues for a long time now. It's really sad to see.

I don't even think the family knew what James was really doing to her. Joseph was living with them. If he had seen James slapping Janet around, James would be dead right now. Real talk.

As TMZ first reported, James and Murray are both being housed in the Administrative Segregation of the L.A. County Men's Jail ... which is awkward since James was Michael Jackson's brother-in-law back when he was married to Janet Jackson in 1984.
