Well, now according to USA Today, it was the highest rated Super Bowl EVER (maybe they revised the final ratings?)...AND Madonna still topped it. Madonna has the highest rated TV moment in U.S. history now:

Super Bowl, Madonna halftime most-watched in TV history

So was Super Bowl XLI a behemoth in the ratings, as always?

Update, 3 p.m. ET:

In a word, yes. The game, became the most-watched program in U.S. TV history, drawing an average of 111.3 million, slightly eclipsing last year's then-record 111 million.

The Super Bowl peaked with 117 million viewers in its final half-hour, while its first half hour (99 million) was its lowest.

Not only that, but Madonna's now-controversial-thanks-to-M.I.A. halftime show averaged 114 million, which also marks the game's most-watched halftime show. Last year's Black-Eyed Peas show averaged 110.3 million.

Post-game, the season premiere of NBC's The Voice sung to 37.6 million viewers, more that twice the show's previous high, according to NBC said.

The Voice easily eclipsed Fox's post-game Glee last year (26.8 million) but fell a million shy of CBS' Undercover Boss debut in 2010 (38.7 million).

Among viewers ages 18 to 49 — advertisers' sweet spot -- the singing competition won 20.8 million viewers, marking the highest such rating for an entertainment series since a post-game Grey's Anatomy in February 2006 and NBC's top-rated entertainment telecast since the May 2004 Friends finale.

Somethings.... not right. So you mean even Black eyed peas got more views than MJ did?

I remember when the Janet thing happened, they said SHE had the most watched halftime viewing and I think it was 94 million with Janet's. I read Michael's was around 90 million.

But wait if 48 million watched Madonna, then that means lesser people watched the other ones.

I'm guessing it's because it's different times.

So that means the other half time shows were probably between 25-45 million. Who knows how many watched Michael and Janet for real? And why did no one investigate how many actual viewers watched THEIR halftime shows. hmmm

Ratings: Madonna's Super Bowl Halftime Show Edges Out the Game

content by The Wrap

By Tim Kenneally at TheWrap

Mon Feb 6, 2012 4:59pm EST

Madonna might not have been the most obvious choice to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show, but she turned out to be a wise choice.

According to numbers released by NBC Sports on Monday, Madonna's performance was the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show featuring entertainment on record :wow: -- and actually edged out the game's averages in both ratings and total viewers.

Madonna's halftime performance, airing from 8 to 8:30 p.m. ET, was watched by 114 million viewers, and scored a 47.4 household rating, narrowly beating out the overall averages for the game, which averaged 111.3 million total viewers and a 47.0 household rating.

In the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic, the singer's mid-game spectacular also squeaked out a victory, grabbing a 41.5 rating, versus the game average of 40.5.

Of course, those were averages, and at times the game handily surpassed the average -- with viewership increasing throughout the night, the game peaked at the end from 9:30 to 9:58 ET, a half-hour that scored a 50.7 household rating/72 share, and 117.7 million total viewers.

Even so, there's no denying that Madonna's performance scored a solid hit, besting last year's performance by the Black Eyed Peas by six percent in the ratings, and beat out last year's halftime viewership by nearly four million viewers. (It performed even better when compared to NBC's last Super Bowl halftime show, besting Bruce Springsteen's performance by 18.3 million total viewers.)

On the social media front, Madonna's halftime performance fared well too -- the show created the second-highest peak in tweets her second, generating 10,245 tweets per second at one point in the performance. (The highest Twitter peak came at the end of the game, with 12,233 tweets per second.

Maybe M.I.A. wasn't really flipping the bird during the performance, but telling the audience, "We're number one"?

You really cant compare the numbers of mj to today. The SB hysteria has become fever pitched in the last decade. Shit nothing new was on any of the other 3 network channels last night except for the 60 minutes special. In this country its become an all day event that everyone is suckered into watching. If not for football then for the commercials, if not that then for the half time show. Hell NBC spent the entire day of programming pumping the game.

Yeah that's true. You had more options back then.

How do we even know people watched what, when. They could have just turned Madonna off and watched the rest later. We may never know really.

Madonna's been in the game for 30 years and can still create anticipation

I wonder if it was someone like Rihanna or Beyonce or Katy Perry, would the numbers be similar...

Madonna had absolutely nothing to do with the Super Bowl ratings being through the roof.

It's the freaking Super Bowl. Hello.

Tom Brady going for his 4th Super Bowl ring and making his 5th Super Bowl apperance and the fact that it was a rematch of the 2007-2008 Super Bowl when the Patriots had a PERFECT season and in the last minutes of that game in 2008 Eli Manning out-Brady'ed Tom Brady late and scored a TD a few plays after a guy caught a ball on his freaking helmet on 4th down off a total hail mary pass....

This was the most hyped Super Bowl in YEARS because of those factors, of COURSE it was going to break viewing records.

I mean if we are being honest here- that is the reason why people tuned into the game....and it was a hell of a game.

As for the actual half-time show? Staging, lighting, and effects were absolutley incredible- but Madonna was well....shit. But that's what she is...a no talent hack that has built an entire career off of being a trend-setting, controversial, edgy, slut. Now that she is none of those things any more and is a responsible 53 year old mother...she is boring. I like Madonna when she was slutting out and making sex books and building a career as one step removed from a pornstar. Now that she isn't those things....she just sucks because she never had talent to begin with.

Any of those acts would have had the same numbers if not better and Beyonce would have been a muuucccch better show- that woman is super talented- unlike Madge with the saggy Vadge.

And all 3 of those women are finnnnnnnnnnnnnnne as hell. I know I would have definitely watched the entire thing throughout if any of them did a show instead of just shutting it off halfway through Madge's set because I wanted to stick needles in my eyes and cut off my ears after about 5 mins in last night.

That's true. So I can understand why the 114 million came in and less than half of that actually watched Madonna's show. I wonder how much views the actual Super Bowl half time shows gets.
