The Jacksons feat. Eddie Van Halen ~ Beat It

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

good riddance, Dirty Diana to me is the most boring uninspired calculated music-by-numbers garbage he ever recorded, by a looooooooong shot. the only track on the album I skipped right from the first spin in '87 and still skip today.

godawful lol

I thought the rumor was that Dave thought it was stupid that Eddie played on the song for free. lol

He did after all pay homage to MJ in Just a Gigolo and it said on Pop Up video that MJ loved it.

Strange, because I've always kinda felt that way about "Beat It", like MJ went, "Okay, I want some of those rock sales, I know that stuff is big right now. Find me whoever the most popular guitar dude is and have him show up at the studio tomorrow."

State of Shock is FUNKIER than them both. And I think the video of DD bangs, but Beat It was groundbreaking in its time and I understand the LOVE it gets. classic. its success is what LED TO Dirty Diana.

I think "Beat It" gets so much love purely because it was like the first time MJ went the rock route and obviously a lot of people love the rock genre, and because of the iconic video. Put those aside and put it next to any other rock songs, or even other rock songs by MJ and honestly it's probably the weakest rock track he's done and there is something very contrived about it. The message in the song is good but even back as a kid when it first came out, I was more interested in the video than the actual song lol . I felt differently about "Dirty Diana" a few years later. "Beat It" came first but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the better song, by default - that's like saying "Purple Rain" is better than "Sign O the Times" or "Parade" because it came first.

I like "State of Shock" - it was one of those tracks that whenever I listened to Victory, I never skipped. But it still doesn't outdo "Dirty Diana", for me.

It is not true that Beat IT is Michael's first forey into rock. The Jackson recorded rock and funk rock way back. All Nite Dancing is rocking pretty hard,so is a funk rocker Dancin MAchine. Song DEstiny contains rock elements. Can You Feel It have classic rock beat. And while i do find Dirty Diana to be a great song it's more to a Jacksons passionate vocals ,musicaly is far less interesting then Beat It. Beat It contains instant recognisable drum machine intro followed by a classic guitar riff.a riff guitar players wish to play. And that fantastic iconinic rock solo.that piece of guitar mastery is maybe the best rock guitar solo ever layed on tape. And Michael's vocals belting and the space in the way his vocals are recorded.wow
