why again we are discussing only MJ? confused He took the list of only the 4th place. Anyone who thinks it's too high, just not in his/her mind. wacky
Why is so little criticism of Justin and Janet and their unfair second place??? lol

The janet performance should only be remembered for it's notoriety - not cause it was actually any good - it sucked balls

That is so ridiculous that they would censor Mick Jagger's lyrics the year the stones played. mad Typical

As usual MJ was a Disney kiddie fest while Prince was rock n roll biatch!!! cool

People don't have much of a long time memory. They had Superbowls in the 1970's too. Carol Channing should get some recognition.

Pretty much, their just choosing the most relevant... 2004/2007 is a bit closer to 2012 than anything after 2000

His perfomrance shouldnt even be in the top10. All about smoke and mirrors. all lip synced his contribution to the show was less then 10%. I could have stood there instead of him and it would be the same

Are you sure that your performance would be able to assemble an audience that would exceed the audience of the game??
Sorry, I do not think so lol

This performance was legendary for two reasons:
1. MJ started it all. He was the first big star guest.
2. He assembled the largest audience

Yes, it was lip syncing, but the use of the whole stadium in performance and original for the 1993 special effects make this show not bad at least.

But the performances by Prince and U2 were simply better. smile

Not true. He wasn't the 1st.

Pretty much it... the rest is just subjective...

This is PRINCE.org so his fans are going to run with the shit they should I mean it is a Prince site lol

He got an entire audience of thousands of people involved in his performance something that had NEVER been done and STILL to this day as not be done on a massive scale... ALSO, I thought his performance was entertaining.... basically snippits from dangerous tour.. I liked how he fused all those songs together...

I thought it was visually entertaining...

I dont know why people keep throwing in that lip syncing arguement. Just because he lip synced doesnt mean it was less entertaining neutral Yes of course live is better but its a difference when your dancing for the majority of the performance neutral ... I dont have no excuse for Heal The World... there is none.

Who has been the BIGGEST international star before Michael?

Michael may not have been the first biggest star but AFTER his performance Super Bowl started to take more consideration into the performances on the same level as the football game..

It did become a blueprint because his performance was the first performance to be on a massive level as it was... The Superbowl wanted to continue that pattern.. They advertise halftime on the same level as the football game. Yes, Michael DID start that..

Plenty have named Michael as having the best half time... I dont trust billboard around the corner... they have even named Michael as being number one in halftime and OTHERS as well... so what is your point? Its BILLBOARD lol

Prince was great, I think Michael was the best though.

I dont like the political games Billboard plays this has nothing to do with Prince before you go into cardiac arrest neutral

Honestly im not big on these halftime shows at all, PRINCE was ok, on point, but playing two covers was LAME, i always said that, dont know if i wouldnt put him at number one for these shows, mainly because most were pretty average, but this overblowing of Prince's show that night has to stop

American Football is not even the biggest sport in the world, soccer is. NFL is a US thing, so an act being internationally known is irrelevant. They book acts that a lot of people in the USA would know. USA is not the world. lol

Michael was the first to have the halftime show to himself, but he was not the first big star to do it. The previous two years were Gloria Estefan and NKOTB. Granted, they are not AS big as him (who is?) but they were current big pop stars.

But yes, it seems he was the first to make it a showcase for one artist/group.

Number# 1. Prince, Super Bowl XLI; Indianapolis Colts 29, Chicago Bears 17 (2007) — The reclusive and toned-down Prince put on a sensational show performing hits such as “Let’s Go Crazy,” “We Will Rock You,” “All Along the Watchtower,” and finishing — appropriately enough, as the rain intensified — with “Purple Rain.” Playing on an elaborate stage shaped like the symbol he used to refer to himself, he used four guitars and was accompanied by the Florida A&M marching band.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Well, considering it was not a Prince show and considering the audience didn't consist of Prince fans it was actually cool, that he did do three covers. I mean, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Foo Fighters and Prince... he covered quite some ground there. It was a different story though when I saw him at the O2 and he opened the show with almost the complete Superbowl performance.

Thats how I feel.. and I am a big Prince fan but thats how I feel...

Dont get me wrong... Prince half time was GREAT:-D I think it has been the BEST in this milenium and had been the best we had seen in a LONGGG ASS TIME (thats why I think people hype it up so much)... but that performance is a bit overrated. Standing by itself.. it was a great performance not compared to others... Me personally.. again I have my own opinion as far as the best haftime show of ALL TIME goes.

MickeyD brought up a very good point.

Most of these lists consist of the Superbowl halftime over the last 20 years.. if they are going to do ALL TIME ranks then they should take into consideration ALL half time performances...

How people quickly forget that Janet and Justin weren't the only ones on there. Sure they were the highest-profile ones but Nelly, Puffy Trick and Kid Rock shared the same bill so that just takes their performance out of the list. The "expose" is what got them on the list at all. I don't even think JANET would believe that performance was a big "highlight". Neither would Justin or anyone else involved.

I was a little harsh on MJ earlier. Production values have been upped over the years as well. In 1993 I'm sure it was quite an effort just to put on MJ's performance, to say nothing of making it a live concert as well. Now it is expected that the performers will deliver a live concert because the technical capabilities are there to make it happen. So we can give Michael that. If he were to do Superbowl today, he would certainly want to make it a live event just due to his competitive nature. Whatever the case, Madonna has her work cut out for her on Sunday. It will be interesting to see if she meets the challenge.

Madonna is doing everything Janet should have done when she performed:

- DEBUT THE NEW SINGLE (WHETHER IT WAS ALL NITE OR JUST A LITTLE WHILE) ON THE SHOW!!!! AND HYPE IT UP AS MUCH AS YOU CAN BEFORE THE SHOW! Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! – its only common sense – some of Janet’s decision’s annoy the hell out of me.

- What a major opportunity she missed by not showcasing her new material to hundreds of millions of people - for sure they would have been bigger hits. If there was no Nipplegate I’m 70% confident "All nite" would have gone #1.

I don't have 10 favorite..but the ones that have stuck out in my mind:

1. Prince (the rain made an already superior performance that more special touched)

2. MJ

3. U2

4. Bruce Springsteen

And that's it.

The most awful ones that I remember only because I was THAT bored2:

1. The Rolling Stones (it was like watching skeletons on stage)

2. Paul McCartney

3. Janet/Justin (if it wasn't for the surprise titty at the end, this performance wouldn't had been memorable)

4. Tom Petty (I only brightened up when he started singing "Free Falling" but after that I went to get some wings)

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
