Updated: Lana Del Rey Talks SNL Backlash, Performs on Letterman

Lana Del Rey performs at Scala in London.

January 30, 2012

Just 36 hours after the most polarizing Saturday Night Live performance in recent memory, Lana Del Rey is in New York, eating a cookie. "I actually felt good about it," she told Rolling Stone. "I thought I looked beautiful and sang fine." But it's clear that Del Rey has been rattled by the overwhelming Internet vitriol hurled her way after her awkward renditions of two tunes, including the breakout single "Video Games."

How did it feel to sing on live TV?

It felt OK. The cast and crew said they loved it. I know some people didn't like it, but that's just the way I perform, and my fans know that.

Are you comfortable onstage?

I'm nervous. I'm not a natural performer or exhibitionist. When I was younger, I hated the focus, and it made me feel strange.

The backlash to that performance has been pretty harsh.

There's backlash about everything I do. It's nothing new. When I walk outside, people have something to say about it. It wouldn't have mattered if I was absolutely excellent. People don't have anything nice to say about this project. I'm sure that's why you're writing about it.

Have I given you the impression that I don't like your music?

I do! Especially the song "Radio." No. I don't know how you feel about it. It's not easy to gauge how people feel about it. I don't really want to go into it. But thank you, I love "Radio" too.

This Q&A by Austin Scaggs is excerpted from the February 16, 2012 issue of Rolling Stone.

Maybe what I like about Ms. Del Rey is that she has a sort of aloofness about the whole thing. Her perspective is that not everyone is going to like this project so why on earth should I get all slit-my-wrists about it. She probably heard that Rolling Stone didn't like it before they asked to sit down with her which is where that comment came from. The whole SNL thing is a media driven firestorm at this stage and she refuses to get involved.

I get the impression that if she weren't constantly informed of critical reaction form outsiders she would be totally unaware for lack of interest. It's refreshing.

Grand scheme: She turned in a really nice performance on her "Video Games" single, but now she's an untested, rushed product. It used to be that people ignored such creatures but now with the advent of the internet EVERYONE is paying attention, seemingly interested and all too ready to spout a criticism and/or opinion.

I've seen that performance, and I was wondering, where in the fuckin' deep blue hell were those indignant people when Rihanna made all of those #1s? Where did they come from all of a sudden? Since folks are performance-concious and all,,,,

Never heard of this woman before this fiasco.

Rihanna can't perform her way out of a paper bag either. lol But apparently they don't care much about Rihanna much less someone that was reportedly hyped like Lana was and believe me she's hyped right now.

I want to add Janet, Kylie and Britney to the mix; three artists who let their backing track do the talking on this very same show. I've been indignant about lipsyncing since forever. HATED when Michael Jackson did it and didn't like when Madonna did, though I COMPLETELY understand in her case.

Why so much hate - she is ok and the album is ok.

Does every artist have to come from the gutter to be credible or appreciated?

Not hate, she's just overhyped. shrug

I'm guessing because she ain't like Britney or someone like that, we gotta like her?

Uh no. lol

I'm wondering if this was the factor.

Britney can't sing worth shit but she's "the underdog".

WHAT? eek

[Edited 1/30/12 14:58pm]the Amnerican Life project

Cause vulture cant sing.

It brings me back to her promotion of the American Life project, where someone thought it was a good idea to have Madonna sing several tracks live at the TRL studio I believe. I thought right then it was those performances that torpedoed the project.

There's something missing in Lana. The album is very underwhelming.

It's easy to see why people were initially interested with such a sublime debut:

That's where it started but I don't know if you expected American viewers to just fall in love with her automatically especially if people were saying she just didn't deliver to their liking. But hey if you like her, that's all that should matter. lol You should ignore anyone that don't share the same views. Just my two cents.

Didn't know her before this thread.

Watched her music video. Sucked.

Youtube'd her SNL performance. Sucked.

What's the big deal?

How could you possibly expect anything else from such a drab (and I use this next word loosely) artist?

She is an image, just like a lot of artists out now. She has a look that can be sold to a few people.

It is so easy to become famous now. This person exemplifies that fact.

I hear what you're saying, but it's not really that serious. I'm just pointing out how she INITIALLY sparked interest.

You know this might actually explain why I dig this so much. This sort of thing would usually occur to me.

Thank you for pointing that out.

My fellow org friends, help me understand what's going on here? This Del Rey character has recieved more threads in the past three weeks than any newbie I've noticed in some time, where are the vapors coming from? If I started a thread on St. Vincent who is actually talented and beautiful, it could go the way the dodo bird and Del Rey has buring threads? I don't care either way but somebody needs to make a case for exsistence.
