Multi-Platinum Artists That Wouldn't Make It on Amer.Idol Sometimes I think shows like X-Factor and Idol are sending a very distorted message to the public and younger generation. Artists like these (and more) would get a definite NO from the panel, even though they are not known for thier vocals but a style and sound that is much more than just a voice. Just to name a few. When I introduce young ears to these artists, I always get, "They can't sing, why do you like them?"
Sade George Clinton Prince James Brown Michael McDonald Barry White Stevie Nicks

I'll be glad once this show finally realizes no one will watch it anymore. I think most are starting to get that message.

Madonna MJ Prince Janet Debbie Harry Bowie The list goes on... American Idol only finds good voice, rarely do they find a good voice with the It factor of the names above. 2012: The Queen Returns

I don't watch the show, but I would imagine none of these would get far:
Bob Dylan KC (from the Sunshine Band) The Temptations Teddy Pendergrass Joe Cocker Wilson Pickett James Brown Bee Gees Beatles (Paul might get through) Tracy Chapman Vince Neil (Motley Crue) James Hetfield (Metallica) Reba McEntire (too much Southern accent) Willie Nelson Ozzy Osbourne Peter Gabriel Leon Redbone Rufus Thomas Geddy Lee (Rush) Prince New Edition (Johnny might) Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd) Mick Jagger Run DMC Beastie Boys Rare Earth John Fogerty Don Henley

There's a reason all those winners flop, the music industry isn't just about vocal ability. Melanie Amaro (winner of X-Factor) is just another big-voiced diva. She'll most likely fail even with good promotion and good material. The only way I see her being successful is someway riding the Adele hype train, which could backfire and become a fail of epic proportions.
Rihanna and Madonna come to mind.

People will continue to watch...especially OLD people.

No groups are allowed to be on Idol, but they could be on XFactor.
I disagree about Reba. I think she would have made it if AI had been around when she was starting out. The same for Teddy P. I think he could have been successful if AI had been around. He was a tall, good-looking black guy that women would swoon over. He definitely would have made it. [Edited 2/4/12 19:50pm] **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Teddy is one of the best R&B males vocalists imo. He was so sexy. Teddy could get it!

I think Britney's likability and charm would have been too irresistable to turn down. I've always thought she would at least make the Top 3 if not winning the entire show.
As for who wouldn't? Rihanna, Paula Abdul (Go figure), Chris Brown, Jennifer Lopez (Go figure), Usher, Justin Timberlake...

They have to actually sing on American Idol, so she wouldn't even get through the door on the 1st audition. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

I didn't mean the groups per se, but the individual members, that's why I picked out Paul McCartney & Johnny Gill. Aren't they trying to pick people with Top 40 pop appeal? Then Teddy's voice is too gruff and gospelly for that. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Im sort of scratching my (bigger) head as to why people even give a shit about AI anymore. I love Steven Tyler and love luv J.Ho as people, but come on, when was the last time someone won who really made for an interesting or cool pop star...
when they have a hip hop american idol with Snoop, Ice Cube, Q Tip, Erykah, Jill, Questlove, D'angelo, Wayne and Eminem as the judges and guest performers wake me up, thx I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

I see your point. However, Teddy was really popular with the crossover audiences. Though he didn't chart that well on the pop charts, he had crossover appeal. He did host the American Music Awards. He was also a staple on the Dinah Shore show. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

(I don't agree with some of the choices here: Prince and Barry White, for example, would receive a big YES for their voices only, they would try to "tame" Prince, though...)
but I do agree about Sade, the fools of AMERICAN IDOL would say: "voice too thin, she's a bit boring"
so for me it's
Sade Black Sabbath / Ozzy Cher Kate Bush Bob Dylan Mick Jagger Julio Iglesias Janis Joplin
I wouldn't include rap/hip-hop acts because it's a popular genre these days, so they would receive support...

there's a big difference between people who can't sing and people with a peculiar/personal style
BIG DIFFERENCE

I do agree. Ijs American Idol is good for something. They have discovered some pretty good voices. She Don't Speak..But She Remembers

That's all they do that's good. But the ones who get on there would have a tough time getting out of that box. Sometimes a good voice is not all that matters and sometimes it does. It's tricky.
