If you include compilation albums it is nearly impossible to get an accurate total as there are so many and some of them are budget/grey area releases. There are also quite a few latter day live albums, some of which are the same concert released under different names. Then there are compilations of James Brown productions/associates, some of which are titled as James Brown albums.
It is also a little tricky because some of his "proper" studio albums in the sixties collected some of the same songs. Many of his sixties albums were collections of singles, often dating back several years, with some "new" studio recordings added to pad out the length. There were some cohesive instrumental albums but generally James' sixties albums were a bit of a mish mash and it was not until the late sixties/early seventies that he started releasing proper albums rather than just collections of miscellaneous songs.
Generally what I do is ignore the post King/Polydor era albums. It is much easier to get a grip on his discography if you stop in the early eighties.
The same thing applies to his compilations. If it was released on a small label that you never heard of you can probably safely disregard it. | |

I know he charted 131 songs on billboard. As for albums, his first was released in 1958. 10 years later he had 9 albums released that year alone. There was recently a Hip-O-Select collection which featured 11 sets. PRINCE: Always and Forever
