D'Angelo's Third Album 90 Percent Finished, Says Manager

January 19, 2012

D'Angelo will formally break his 12-year hiatus from music this year, according to manager Kevin Liles. While a specific release date has not been confirmed for the anticipated third studio album, at one point titled James River , Liles says the project is 90-95% finished.

"It's 12 years of emotion, passion and love for music that has been pent up," Liles told Billboard. "D'Angelo is finally going to share all of that. It's a special space where he's not searching for a song -- he's reaching for your soul."

Following his debut
Brown Sugar (1995) and follow up Vodoo (2000), D'Angelo has tapped ?uestlove and Q-Tip for the effort, which he primarily penned and produced.

Since "Brown Sugar," D'Angelo has sold over 3 million albums worldwide according to Nielsen SoundScan.

I guess if Chinese Democracy was finally released maybe there is some hope that D'Angelo will release a third album. Still, at this point colour me skeptical. I'll believe it is coming out when I am holding it in my hands.

Hopefully if the album sounds like that preview clip that someone posted a while back than they are not going to be his competition... His competition will be folks like Musiq, Mint, Kelly, Jill etc on the real r&b stations. Trust me, there ready for some D...no worries wink

I agree with rialb if CD finally came out.. so could this, but i don't think it will be a big album sadly anx that few besides the hardcore fans will care.

At the point, I'll settle for a 4-song digital EP. Dude's gotta bring it after such a long, long dry spell. These false starts and broken promises really wear on my patience.

Can't say I'm super excited about this because I was never that big on D'Angelo outsie of his singles (which are pretty damn good). But when it's released I expect some good songs just because of the name. And if it makes any impact, it'll be played on the smooth R&B/Adult Contemporary stations with artists like Kelly Price, Jill Scott, Jahiem, etc. At this point, I don't think he needs or should compete with Trey Songz or Chris Brown. He too old for that ish lol. That's a sexy ass pic of him btw razz.

that's my point. have you seen those peoples soundscan totals lately (bar Jill - but even her last one is sagging a bit, and yes so did Erykah's last 2). that type of REAL R&B doesn't sell 500k anymore. maybe 200-400k. he's used to being a platinum artist and getting all the attention when he's out with a record. he's king of that scene - Musiq's last one barely made a dent! im just saying...and those people have all been working the past decade. i think we have a lauryn hill situation on our hands. People have moved on...although, i hope im wrong!

Lauryn Hill... thats different... She made some comeback concerts but she didnt come out with a full length album with new material. It might have gotten a better responce than random concerts that only covered old songs....

At this point, it would be foolish of D angelo or anybody for that matter who make real r&b to care about sales if they are trying to make real shit. D angelo obviously still has a core fanbase that will be willing to buy and of course if he tours that would be a plus.

I just think if he does come back and if the article is true he needs to give it his all and not half ass it.

I hope your wrong too. Especially if its good and warrants the attention. Even if he's limited to mostly black AC stations, if his first single is hot, he'll get most of his original fans back (at least).

I feel like this.....I would love to hear some new D'Angelo, but am I holding my breath for it? No. There are other distractions out there in the mean time. lol Just keep your expectations low about the album, & maybe you won't be disappointed by it when/if it finally does come. wink

Jesus hit the brakes faint

I remember him being so frustrated with ladies in the audience shouting @ him to "take it off" instead of actually listening to the music. Well, mission accomplished, somewhat. lol

I love these type of albums where the artist is interested in the whole project. Not just a particular single. I have been waiting patiently with this one. With Kevin Lyles on board this means its really going to happen. D'angelo is back!!!!!!! Plus with Jesse Johnson on board as his guitarist it is going to be fire!!!!!!!!!!

Almost two months ago Questlove said the album was 97% finished and now it's only 90% done. I guess that in about a year there will nothing left razz

Ok, let's try and get this straight...

90% in 12 years, that's 7.5% per year, so we're looking at another 16 months (1.3333 years) to complete the remaining percentage. Meaning an expected release date of somewhere around May 2013. nod

Ville said:

Dammit! mad Now, we have to factor this in... So, although the album is progressing positively at 7.5% per year, there's a 42% (7% ÷ 2 x 12) annual negative rate of regression! All of which means a net loss of around 34.5% of the album each year, meaning that the entire album will have disappeared by the start of 2015!

I think the only thing we can rely on is what mathematicians have termed the 'infinite D'Angelo theorem'. That is, if 100 D'Angelos have 100 Fender Rhodeses and an infinite period of time, they will almost certainly produce a third album eventually. woot!
