D'angelo has new tour dates - let's reminisce on the Voodoo Tour Since D'angelo appears ready for a comeback, I've made a blog post to reminisce on the Voodoo tour and the Soultronics band. My blog post sums up some of the recent news and also includes some youtube videos from the 7/16/00 North Sea Jazz Fest show in which I took the FM audio and synced it to the (suprisingly good quality) audience video.
Please check it out and feel free to spread this link far and wide, share it on facebook, twitter, etc.:

No discussion because D'angelo is a one album wonder at this point - he hasn't proved himself to be worthy of much other than being a co-artist to Bob Power's ability to make great albums.
Voodoo is being rereleased as Doodoo to ensure customers know exactly what they're getting before they buy. |

The world has been waiting twelve years for him to get his shit together, get healthy and off substances and realize his "potential " . If his New Year self is better than before, your rocks will get shaken as will this board, till then .... tumbleweeds. Jeux Sans Frontiers |

Harsh to the point of being ridiculous Mr. 'Bhadra'......what are YOU worthy of?...what is it about YOURSELF that you hate so much...that you need to project your disrespectful bile onto D'Angelo?...
Those that have no 'soul' or feel for this kind of music...only vitriol...should perhaps stick to...bhangra? |

I enjoyed your blog and grabbed that FM soundboard. D'Angelo is a fav of mine. The early 2012 shows should be an indicator of where it could go. Will you blogging for the new tour?

Pretty funny, but imo, Voodoo was classic. D'Angelo is just one of the laziest & most stupid artist with the most potential to come along. He's ruined, but I can't front, BOTH of his albums are classic.....Voodoo is just for acquired taste....

What does bhangra have to do with this? Oh I see, you went to my myspace page which is part of the signature in my posts, determined that I was of some sort of East Indian decent and then made the connection in your head that I must enjoy the bhangra music!!! Hahahaha... I don't love it but certainly enjoy the sounds of that genre of music when I hear it - I think you're right in assuming this because I'm Indian!!!
As for the hate, you've taken a valid arguement in regards to D'angelo and his catalogue of music and infused your awesome ability to ensure that only you and the world's popoulation of 16 - 17 year old girls are able to clearly comprehend the discussion. Thanks for doing this for me as I thought I was at a Prince fan site and may have assumed who the audience is here... however, I may be correct and you not... I think the fans on this site recognize that talent when they see it and unfortunately, D'angelo hasn't sold us with his first two and only two records.

I absolutely wish I loved Voodoo - I played the heck out of Brown Sugar, bought all of the CD Maxi singles back in the day and was very much in love with the music. Waited 5 years for D'angelo to get what Questlove was touting his raw dirty mind like music on. I remember seeing an interview where D'angelo said the Brown Sugar record was too clean and he wanted to make something more raw and real. Became even more fascinated when the idea of one of the tracks on the album was intended to be a tribute to Prince. Questlove drummed up so much hype on okayplayer.com.
Then the album came out...
He wrote one long ass groove which is cool if you're looking for that but I come from the school of writing songs with hooks, bridges, choruses, vamps, etc, etc. I come from the world of Prince and MJ who wrote pop music because they were pop musicians - kinda like D'angelo. There wasn't a single song on Voodoo that made me want to do anything - it was emotionless. Devil's Pie had potential but it fell apart too. The only song that had anything reminiscent of cool was a cover of Feel Like Makin Love - a song he didn't write.
The hype caught up with the poor guy - here's hoping he manages to put it together. I still enjoy listening to him sing and his background vocals - the vocals are very reminiscent of Prince in that they are full of harmony and melody! |

You...have an extremely overactive imagination...I suspect you talk as you write, ten to the dozen...to cover up your embarrassment no doubt.
The irony of talking about 'hate'...when you Mr. Bhadra demonstrate your mannerly upbringing by derisively calling a respectable artist's album 'Doodoo'...and then speak of comprehending a discussion.
I was only showing you to yourself young man. You are lucky I'm in a good mood.
Moving on, I came here to look for commentary on the Voodoo Tour...but anyway, the album was truly amazing, 'Greatdaynmorning'...absolutely incredible and original...the entire album is full of gems...for someone to say it lacks emotion...perhaps they have a different experience as to what emotion is...this may sound 'out there' but I think the album cover and the voodoo theme...may have put people off in a subconscious way... which may have coloured their experience of the music (which was amazing) from then on... |

Anthony Hamilton & Shelby Johnson as some of his back up singers. Mega! Was very surprised D'angelo left the music industry after this tour. But not after I heard his reason.... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. |

How insightful.
Any more comments on the subject of the thread? Apart from 'Doodoo?' (...because despite using that phrase, apparently Bhadra is 'grown up' and absolutely doesn't use colouring books). [Edited 12/27/11 3:35am] |

This is funkyandy trying to be clever as he knows that there isn't a reason for D'angelo 'leaving the industry'.

I'm on okayplayer.com everyday after work and Questlove often shared little tid bits of information every now and again... one of the things that he shared regarded the reception of the band and their music during that Voodoo tour. Quest said that they had rehearsed forever and were really keen on ensuring that the arrangements of the music were as strong as they could make them - D'angelo wasn't too thrilled about his audience really eager to see him take his shirt off like he did in the Untitled video. Essentially, he was disappointed by his fans not really listening to what they were doing musically.
Quest also shared that D'angelo had major stage fright. He said that they'd watch video boots of Prince and Sly to get themselves amped for the performance but D would struggle.

Yes, I heard the same. Quest gave me tix to the Seattle Voodoo show. When I saw Shelby, Anthony Hamilton, and Bilal Oliver on backup and a REALLY incredible band, I was floored at the arrangements. Yes, the women (and possibly some men) went crazy when he took his shirt off and started humping the stage, but honestly, though... musically it was a GREAT show. His odes to Prince, Sly and Marvin during the arrangements were great to listen to live. Bilal and Anthony's little ad lib spots were great, and if I remember correctly Shelby J may have had a little ad-lib section. I distinctly remember Bilal though, because I was then told by ?uest that his album was in the works.
Really dope show.

Wasn't it kinda confirmed that D'Angelo had stage fright and he had cold feet from fans wanting him to be sexual? That's almost why Marvin Gaye didn't wanna do his final tour because he felt his fans wanted him to be sexual. I'm guessing that's one of the reasons he was like "fuck y'all" basically. I don't know what's up with him but I just hope the new tour ain't a bust. |

I saw a show during the Voodoo tour and the concert was GREAT.
I used to believe that D´Angelo could easily make a comeback and get his shit together but that was before I knew he´s smoking crack and doing coke.
Maybe some rehab time and a month in the gym and some mentoring would help him but I have my doubts now. If even Alan Leeds with his vast experience and wisdom couldn´t help him, then I don´t see much of a future for D´Angelo...but I´d be more than happy to see him on tour again and hear some of his new songs. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?" |

What was it like hanging out with Alan Leeds? Any cool Prince stories?
