Recently, in another 11 page flamebait thread found on Music and More, an orger stated that "funk is dead" and is not listened to by anyone under 30. This sparked an interesting potential topic.

I believe that funk is still alive and well, or at least is a large part of the DNA, of modern hip-hop/rap, be it a good thing or a bad thing. Stay with me here.

Funk is a very rhythmic based genre. Unlike most other genres, melody comes second to rhythm and "groove". That's all too present in most rap music.

I hear funk's influence primarily in the way the 808 drums are patterned. I'm quite unsure how to describe, but I can hear the connection between funk music and rap when I hear certain songs. For example:

They're too slow and the weak sounding drum machines in them sound like they've been badly edited offbeat with a pause button on a cassette recorder. And what groove? I NEVER said HAM was funky in the slightest.

I'm 24 and I listen to funk. It's easily my favorite genre. I think minneapolisfunq is also in his early 20s and we have similar tastes in music.
