Apparently there's a cd on the way, and one of the above videos is a new song.

For me, the only bad thing about his clearly succesful return to the stage is that I wasn't there to witness it Those new songs sound great. I wonder if he was going for a Parade type of vibe with that song Charade considering Clare Fischer was supposed to do the string arrangment? That snare drum thing also reminded me of Prince circa 86-87. And isn't there Prince bootleg called Charade too? "Life's an elevator, it goes up and down. Life's an elevator can't you dig the sound?" -Marc Bolan

"The Charade" sounds more layered and complex than his usual arrangements. I hope its on the new album dropping this year(?).

I say this as a D'Angelo fan. I'm just not of the blinkered fans posting on this topic. And the other new song...it's OK, that's all...it's like an average Prince "Parade" outtake...even the title of the songs says it all (we all know that D collects Prince boots)...
Voodoo sounds amazing. The production and grooves are so good that at first it obscures the lack of material. [Edited 1/27/12 4:55am]

It sounds nothing like the 80s Prince outtake bearing the same title as his. In fact, D's is much better.

Er, there isn't a Prince outtake entitled "Charade" and I wasn't saying that.

Interestingly, I found an early demo of the song "Parade" with that title.

Wrong title. | |

It's possible an engineer mislabeled the tape, but I still find that amusing.

They did not go as far as giving 5 stars though... Oh, I forgot, these are reserved to indie rock musicians

Looking good!! Can't wait to see him in London next Friday.
Do we know the setlist from Stockholm? 1000 deaths maybe?

"The Charade" is hot! If it sounds like a "Parade" outtake then that's cool with me. I was waiting for D to bust out a guitar solo as the song went out.
If this song and "1000 Deaths" are on his new CD then it'll be worth the wait. I'm hoping it will have 15 or 16 tunes on it.
I love Jef Lee Johnson..hoping he'll stay with him if Jesse can't do the tour.

I mostly agree with you:
The majority of Voodoo consists of vamps. D'Angelo is not a songwriter in the classic sense but he's great at constructing grooves.
And the new tune definitely sounds like it came off of Parade (which I think is Prince's best work); trying to get Fischer to score it is just further proof that D'Angelo is well aware of his particular influences.
But I don't think he should be knocked for not being a classic songwriter and subsuming Prince and I don't think Voodoo is lacking material. You are listening to it incorrectly - listen to it the same way you would listen to a Fela Kuti album. Fela did not write songs in the sense of say, a typical ii-V-i chord progression. He wrote grooves, wrote melodies to fit the groove and orchestrated around the groove. Hell, Kind of Blue is mostly vamping too!
For being a groove based album, Voodoo still has great melodic sensibilities in how D' writes and arranges his vocals; I think D'Angelo is the best vocal arranger I've ever heard;what he does with his vocals reminds us of how the voice is the first instrument. And I think "The Root" alone should satisfy those wanting chordal progression.

Hey, I love grooves - and I love D'Angelo's vocal arrangements. I just think that there's not much substance to D'Angelo's stuff once you get past the grooves. It lacks the interesting aspects of Lewis Taylor's stuff, for example - Lewis has often been accused of not writing songs, but he can...and often just prefers to be obtuse. But he's fascinating when he does this. I don't feel the same way with D'Angelo. I know that the new songs aren't being presented in amazing quality via YouTube clips...but I'm not feeling any excitement from what I'm hearing. It is good to hear someone doing proper funk but it leaves me with the same slightly empty feeling that I got from Voodoo tour shows...great band, but it's D aping Prince's live Parade shows...and Prince in turn was aping James Browns's show, but there was a vitality to what P was doing that made it feel fresh.

in simplest terms, can you break down what vocal arranging is and what makes someone gifted at it? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Of the the clips posted I enjoyed the one titled Charade the most (didn't bother the Shit goddam, never liked that song). The rest was meh, but that's just me. I'm not fond of over long vamps I don't care who's doing it D, Prince, or Parliment. And of those three Parliment/Funkadelic was the best at it.
So I'm back to just put out the fracking album if it's in fact 90% done.
