Funk is still alive

Recently, in another 11 page flamebait thread found on Music and More, an orger stated that "funk is dead" and is not listened to by anyone under 30. This sparked an interesting potential topic.

I believe that funk is still alive and well, or at least is a large part of the DNA, of modern hip-hop/rap, be it a good thing or a bad thing. Stay with me here.

Funk is a very rhythmic based genre. Unlike most other genres, melody comes second to rhythm and "groove". That's all too present in most rap music.

I hear funk's influence primarily in the way the 808 drums are patterned. I'm quite unsure how to describe, but I can hear the connection between funk music and rap when I hear certain songs. For example:

I feel like I'm on the right track here. Opinions?

I would not INSULT funk with any of these "songs".

I'm not saying anything like that. lol

But I believe that the core ingredient of rap is still funk music, albeit in a different way.

Mrsoulpower would beg to differ with you. Outside of what the original post says, funk is doing well in underground communities.

If Andy opens this thread he's gonna shit a brick falloff.

Oh hell naw! There's no strong drums and bassline. They're too slow and the weak sounding drum machines in them sound like they've been badly edited offbeat with a pause button on a cassette recorder. And what groove? Hell, there's no groove or rhythm whatsoever in them. Just some weak generic noise under some "talking". It's just typical shit hop.

Andy is a four letter word.

I know, I know. People are stubborn in their opinions and there's no way they're gonna change in that respect. lol

PS I'm definately feeling J. Cole nod

That's the only thing about the org that I wish would change.

^Now if you posted something like this it would have made more sense.

Rhythmic drum patterns aren't exclusive to the funk genre either.

Yes it is.

Can't you feel that bounce?

J-Cole's song is the only track you posted with any flavor.

Calling HAM "funky" in the sense that it contains elements of funk music just makes you look like an idiot.

I NEVER said HAM was funky in the slightest.

I'm 24 and I listen to funk. It's easily my favorite genre. I think minneapolisfunq is also in his early 20s and we have similar tastes in music.

So to hell with that "nobody under 30 listens to funk" boolsheet! lol

But Smooth your first post started with some young n incorporating Paula Adbul and MC Skat Cat camp into his song. This is not funk for grown folks, this is more like the death of funk. Send me your address and I'll ship you some bandages for your foot. Now throw that damn gun out.

No offense to the original author, but that statement is just plain stupid. Just like any other genre things grow and evolve.
