Madonna? Really?

She's on Leno. Doing the fake British accent. They're playing clips from her horrid movie.

She can't sing. She's a passable dancer and rider of trends. She can't act.

What's her real appeal, and why are marketers saying her Super Bowl performance will "make history?"

Madonna? Really???

Exactly. In 1983,they thought she would be a one-hit wonder who wouldn't last beyond the 80s.But look around...she's still here, making history....

She's a very shrewd and clever businesswoman. I would say she is that first and foremost before anything else like singer, dancer, artist, etc

You serious?

People are after good pop music. She provides that and has done so consistently for decades now, and works her ass off at it.

It seems strange to me when people don't see her appeal.

Yeah I agree. I understand not everybody likes her but to not understand why she's been at the top of her game for 30 years seems odd to me. Really? Indeed.

Yeah, that!

Not every artist in the world is going to be releasing Beethoven's 5th on a regular basis. And some people out there actually want something different, like quality pop music or great dance music...Madonna has given this to us consistently since the early 80s. Just because its not "high brow" doesn't mean its not good or entertaining.

And the fact that she has stayed around for so long surely proves that. If someone is genuinely talentless I'm pretty sure they would have faded out long before the 30 year mark. Just look at all the wannabes from the early X-Factor and Pop Idol series...where are they now?

I think it's a waste of time to analyze why an artist has many fans.Obviously, they have *something* that appeals to many people. You may not like it,but millions of other people do.It is what it is lol I think Madonna has lasted this long simply because she makes great pop and dance music. It's really that simple.

I never really got her appeal either. I understand that she has fans and I like a few of her songs, but why she is such a huge star and icon I don't get at all. For me she hasn't got what you might call the x-factor, IMO there's nothing special about her. Neither about her work nor her looks or personality, but she is pretty avarage in evertyhing she does and is shrug.

You ever been to one of her live shows (I'm not having a dig, I'm just curious)??

I've had friends that weren't keen on her who came to some of her shows with me and after seeing her do her thing live they understood why she's such a big star and icon.

Her last tour was the most successful tour by a solo artist in history? I thought Shitney's tour was. Do we need a certain someone to come in here and post a thread full of sales figures? evillol

Well if you have a point here then maybe they kinda wished they were as brave as her to do certain things she does without caring that she gets attention for that and are impressed by that. But that's still not enough explanation why she has such a long and successful career. She just has no star appeal for me, but then again Rihana is the most average and boring woman I can think of and she is a huge star too shrug.

It was around the same time when she and Cindy Lauper became really successful and Cindy Lauper is so much more intersting as an artist and personality IMO. She appeared to have star quality and Madonna seemed to be the 1 hit wonder. Not so long agao I saw a german TV host talking about watching Madonna practising for performing her song on his show (I think it was "Holiday")and saying how totally unimpressed he was with her "talent" and that he was totally sure he would never ever hear of her again.

It's American Idol, but he is somebody who has star appeal and is a real talent IMO

But if you look at the music Cyndi has released over the years, it simply doesn't measure up. She has had fantastic moments, like her debut and Bring Ya To the Brink. But her work is so inconsistant everybody even saw Hat Full Of Stars as a transparent attempt to catch up with M.

Part of Madonna's talent that everybody want's to ignore is that she has consistantly put out music that is ahead of the curve and on top of the charts. She's not a one trick poney.

That's how I became a fan. biggrin

I had the "Immaculate Collection," and that was pretty much it. Never really got into her but she was always intriguing in the media. Whether videos, or TV appearances I was always aware of all the cool and crazy things she was up to; it was hard not to be. It wasn't until a friend took me to the "Reinvention Tour," that I finally got it. I was blown away. Besides the top notch theatrics of her concerts the most amazing thing to watch is her energy on stage. Not one dull moment. And I never got when people said she lips synchs on stage. She's clearly singing live...not very well, obviosly, but she's singing. After that tour I saw Confessions and Sticky & Sweet. And now I'm a Madonna fan. And I come from the school of Joni Mitchell and Ani Difranco. lol
