I'm not a big fan of Mariah, but I have to give it up on this one. The way she layered her vocals towards the end of the song is brilliant. It sounds like she's singing two and three part harmony's and singing two and three part melodies. BRILLIANT!

So what do you do when somebody you're devoted to
Suddenly just stops loving you and it seems they haven't got a clue
Of the pain that rejection is putting you through
Do you cling to your pride and sing "I will survive"
Do you lash out and say "How dare you leave this way"
Do you hold on in vain as they just slip away

Those lyrics are sooo true, it's definitely one of Mariah's best records and so ahead of it's time. I used to think it sounded like Bone Thugs Crossroads.

Like the song and album - but she ruins it when she does a god damn video for it. There are only a small handful of decent videos that she's done - most of them are from her first album.

One of the best in her catalog. The layered vocals are to die for! This is one of the better collaborations she's done.

Stevie J (Producer of the record) gave some info on the record

Yea, one of my favorites. Actually I was in the studio with a friend of mine named Eric Williams out of Buffalo, and we were sitting down in the studio with Mariah, and she was like “I want to do something like Bone Thugs type of, you know simple but effective.” So I sat down and played her some melodies, and put different drum patterns down, and she wrote the song, we actually wrote the song together, and she was actually like she wanted to get Bone on the record. So after she finished doing what she did, she called up Bone, got them on the record, and that was history. That became one of my favorite records too, another one of my favorites, I have a few favorites man *Laughs*

Great song, love it. At first however when I saw this thread I thought it would be about the whole TRL incident.

I adore Mariah Carey. She's one of the greatest in my opinion. I personally believe that this song pioneered the use of fast, rhythmic lyrics in popular R&B, later emulated by the likes of Destiny's Child, Usher, and Mariah herself ("We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off" have similar feels).

I would really love to her or someone else do a stripped down, acoustic version of this track that later builds into the bassline, piano, and drum machine, but I have been told that I am too particular.
