I'm not a big fan of Mariah, but I have to give it up on this one. The way she layered her vocals towards the end of the song is brilliant. It sounds like she's singing two and three part harmony's and singing two and three part melodies. BRILLIANT!

Those lyrics are sooo true, it's definitely one of Mariah's best records and so ahead of it's time. I used to think it sounded like Bone Thugs Crossroads.

Like the song and album - but she ruins it when she does a god damn video for it. There are only a small handful of decent videos that she's done - most of them are from her first album.

This one is classic from Mariah.....People can say what they want about Mariah she has been a smart business woman and i have mad respect for her and her musical legacy......She is LEGEND!!!! IMO

she has high respect for them. btw just recently she revealed what track really inspired Breakdown, fast forward to 8:20

One of the best in her catalog. The layered vocals are to die for! This is one of the better collaborations she's done.

I adore Mariah Carey. She's one of the greatest in my opinion. I personally believe that this song pioneered the use of fast, rhythmic lyrics in popular R&B, later emulated by the likes of Destiny's Child, Usher, and Mariah herself ("We Belong Together" and "Shake It Off" have similar feels).

I would really love to her or someone else do a stripped down, acoustic version of this track that later builds into the bassline, piano, and drum machine, but I have been told that I am too particular.
