Her 2nd best album to me. Its also Janet at her most PRETENTIOUS.... I mean the style and look was extreme for her standards. I love how she freely talks about sex in all its glory - positive and negative - but this album is really where it should have stopped. I consider this album the sequel to Rhythm Nation, in that its a concept album based on societal issues. I wish she made more albums like that.

I don't remember the impact of this album at all but I remember everybody at school tryna do the moves from I Get So Lonely at recess. My sister loved the Together Again video and we both were amazed at Got Till Its Gone (so ICONIC). Thats all I remember from that time. My generation were more obsessed with TLC, Monica, Brandy, Aaliyah, Usher and the popular rappers of the day. Nobody really gave a damn Janet, Michael or any of the older artists. I was 9 when Velvet Rope came out lol

Yeah everyone was mostly into those artists and I was too, though there was a group (and no, not specific to race) that enjoyed these artists, and then a group who enjoyed the teen pop and then people into rock and industrial who were more likely to have respect for older artists. But those mature for my age did appreciate older artists if they remembered liking them a few years back. A lot of people liked Mariah too that time and though I did as well, I didn't like Butterfly as a whole album until a few years ago, Velvet Rope did it for me.

I fucking LOVE Butterfly!!!!!! OMG, the video for Honey was my shiiiiiiit!!! Butterfly (the song) is HANDS DOWN my favorite Mariah song. Breakdown was ingenius and My All was so sexy and riveting. I remember Mariah's era more than Janet's. I love me some Mariah. Whitney had The Preacher's Wife soundtrack which basically the soundtrack at my house. We wore that album OUT!! I think they were the only oldies that really appealed to us though you had the odd Toni Braxton / Mary J. fan here or there. Alot of people liked Kirk Franklin as well. lol lol lol

Yeah I remember the Butterfly era too and loved the singles and had the album. People were into her and Mary J.Blige, and J LO when she put out music. I always found it silly they saw Janet as old and not them when she is just 3-5 years older than them and more youthful. I remember songs from the Preacher's Wife soundtrack when they came out and loved Step By Step. I guess we are old souls.

But since you were 9 and I was about 14/15 during VR, I'm sure kids enjoyed Janet and Whitney in the first half of the 90's more likely. Whitney was enjoyed too from what I remember in the late 90's with her comeback album, but she wasn't charting high like before, duetted with current divas of the time, and had a dance remix of a major radio hit to get high on the charts.

After The Bodygyard era Whitney became "uncool" to the youngsters because of the more adult work she was doing. It wasn't until 1998 when My Love Is Your Love hit that she became relevant to the younger crowd again. Then after that she was only relevant to her diehard fans lol.

Wow, glad I found this thread before it went away

I'm not so sure I agree with you completely. I was in middle school during the Waiting to Exhale/Preacher's Wife period, and people were feeling Exhale and Count On Me which we also did for an assembly, and so many of us had the soundtrack, and were feeling Whitney along with the younger artists. Another popular artist at the time we enjoyed was Toni Braxton.

Like Janet... very underrated currently... Toni had some powerhouse vocals on her and good classics.

I was reading Toni's wikipedia about a month ago and there's so much she did that I didn't know or forgot about. I think those who grew up on her in the 90's will always remember her though. You're Making Me High and Un-Break My Heart were hard to get away from, and I remember how popular that dancehall remix of You're Making Me High was. She had several good cuts in the 00's too like on Libra, but that album didn't sell either, it couldn't have been the red hair either, cause she was rocking it!

Velevet Rope era was awesome. I remeber some people who didn't even like pop loved Together Again. I remember a lot of love for it, expecially I get Lonely. Even if people didn't like the original the had the Boyz II Men version to love razz

Boyz II Men would have been a great choice, but it was Blackstreet.

I thought it was some other group. Boyz II Men would have been perfect for the remix

I guess they were getting ready to tour, there were so many concerts I wanted to go to that year, but only got the one I would have traded for the rest: Velvet Rope! Till this date it's the best show I have ever attended in person, and the best tour ever IMO is MJ's Bad tour.

This is for the 0 to 18 at the time Velvet Rope was released. Did your peer group enjoy Janet Jackson at this time of kiddy bands and post-2pac/Biggie hip hop? I was 14 and though people liked Together Again and I Get Lonely, it was mainly those who liked r&b if they weren't into pop, and even then they seemed to like her older stuff better and cared less than before. It made me sad cause it was my favourite album and felt everyone had to hear it, but some were too immature to give her a second look and were not liking her red hair and that tattoo, or calling her lesbian and laughing, and I didn't get what that had to do with the music.
