If there's one thing this lil' munchkin does absolutely positively right, its his dance scenes(She's Gotta Have It, School Daze, Malcolm X,,,,take your pick). This is def one example,,,,

But it doesn't end there. The song made such an impact on me, I had to go back to my folks crates and check the Hamp, unfortunately, I ended up with a couple of LPs from Verve that shocased him in an intimate setting - while great, it wasn't what I wanted to hear at that time - long story short, I found it, and found with it a HEAP load of folks on the ride with him(Dinah, Jimmy Scott, Dizzy, Benny Goodman, Charlie Christian, Mingus, Nat Cole Kind, Betty Carter, Quincy Jones and many others).

As far as the music, I've always loved the big band era's music. Everything is so eloquent and classy. I love it. Something about live horns does something to me.

Its funny that we regard big band as classy nowadays. Back then, when the song was released, I bet the general census was that Illinois Jacquet's solo was "sexually charged" In fact, damn near most jazz writers of that era always make a point of considering solos by black musicians to be some kind of "sexual innuendos".

Listening to some of the music, can't say I blame them.

True. But going by how 98% of music these days are explicitly sexually charged, it really makes the big band era music seem like first base.

Appearantly, he was good friends with Milt Jackson and Billie Holiday as well, among many other musicians from the War era, given that he used to supply 'em with things.
