Militant's Jam Of The Day: Chaka Khan - "Love of A Lifetime"

Produced and written by David Gamson and Green Gartside from Scritti Politti. Green does backing vocals as well.

Give it up!

Loved it.

Somewhat confusing that she released "Love You All My Lifetime" several years later.

It's a shame this is the only video from the 'Destiny' album. There's a lot of good stuff on there. Also, this is my favorite Chaka hair color. Anyone know exactly what color that is? sexy

I've been wondering this for the longest, is that Sandra St. Victor in the video(the girls with CK)?

Never did like this song, or the album it came from. Kept "Earth To Micki", "So Close" and "Tight Fit" in my Ipod, after deleting the rest of the album. What an 80s vomit mess that was.

Yeah, that's Sandra. I'm surprised you kept "Earth To Mickey". Of Chaka's entire catalog, that seems to be the song that gets the most venomous reactions from fans. Personally, I think it was the best chance of scoring the pop hit Warners so desperately wanted.

Anyway...I love me some nice chunky vomit. headbang

Sandra & her brother Mark Stevens showed out in "Tight Fit" in the background department. I gained an appreciation for "Micki" after somebody did a mash-up between her version and the original by Charlie Singleton(Her voice, his production).

WB should've titled it "I Feel For You: Redux Gone Wrong". To her credit, she truly redeemed her talent when she did CK after that, now lets talk about that masterpiece, "Stickey Wicked" garbage notwithstanding music

Yeah, that's Sandra. She was one of Chaka's regular background singers in the '80s. I'm surprised you kept "Earth To Mickey". I agree. This album is an over-synthesized,mid-80s pop disaster.Chaka sounds great as usual, but the production is too generic and soul-less.

'CK' was the most mature sounding (i.e. devoid of trendy electro/dance and pop/rock production) record Chaka had made since '82/'83. I think a good percentage of Chaka's older audience checked out on her and didn't even give 'CK' a listen. And it didn't help matters that there were no videos released. Decades later the "It's My Party" video surfaced online. I don't know where that came from or if it was only released overseas. 'Cause I never saw or heard mention of it back in the '80s.

I remember reading an interview where she consider the process behind that album to be similar of Ask Rufus, in the sense that both albums were more personal and reflective in comparision to her other music. I def get it.

I agree on all points. I have tried to like this album- but beyond the songs you listed- it's a damn mess. I like the I Feel For You albums, but it was so obvious Warners were trying to make a part 2. But CK album is one of her best!

Aww man! I had to go to You Tube to find this after you said it. I had no idea this song had a video. I wonder where it came from? It seems it's a mystery to most people. I love this- Another flawless Womack production!

Great song... one of my favorites by Chaka. Thanks for posting this, Militant. Sadly (like any post I've seen related to Destiny), it ends up a rag on Destiny, praise C.K. thread. Can't just comment on the song alone, can they.

I DESPISE "Earth To Mickey"!!!!!ill By far, the worst, dumbest song in Chaka's incredibly vast catalog. I'm not quite sure what was going on when she and Arif decided to record it.stoned And the fans spoke loud and clear when it was released as a single. It remains her lowest-charting single to date. Terrible, dreadful stuff.

Actually, the "It's My Party" video did receive moderate airplay on The Soul Beat Network and New York Hot Tracks back in 1988. And it did get at least one airing on NBC's Friday Night Videos. Warner Brothers just decided not to put much promotion behind the project so that's why the video probably didn't air like it should have, but it definately aired here in the States.

lol Although I loved both albums, I prefer "Destiny" over "C.K." because 1) It was her first serious attempt at Rock and, 2) her voice was not in great form for "C.K.". Many of her fans dismiss "C.K" for that very reason. And recording "Sticky Wicked" didn't really help matters.omfg That bugger comes in a very close second to "Mickey" as the worst song of her career.

Exactly! I've never understood the comparison of Destiny to I Feel 4 U. With exception of a couple tracks, Destiny was definitely leaning in the Rock/Pop direction (proving she can sing pretty much anything). While I don't mind Sticky Wicked myself, I just can't get into C.K. (tried many times). Love "The Woman I Am" though (IMO, Destiny and The Woman I am always seem to get the shaft from fair weather fans).

One thing I did like about "C.K." is it introduced me to Billie Holiday's music. After hearing Chaka's readings of "The End Of A Love Affair" and "I'll Be Around", it made me want to check out the original versions. And I'm not sure if I would have done that if it wasn't for Chaka. Prior to that, the only Billie song I had ever heard was "God Bless the Child".

I don't know if I would say that. I'm a fan of Chaka for life- I even paid for the import of Destiny. I love The Woman I Am album.

It's just for me- something felt off with Destiny. I like some songs, but when it was over, I felt cold aboout it. I would like to hear what Chaka has to say about this project.

I like C.K. because it was a bit more jazzier, I guess. Some things just click for people. There are plenty of albums I like that people hate.
