I have said this many times before but from about 1984-1991 Paul was basically singlehandedly keeping Kiss going with virtually no help from Gene. Think how much better that era would have been if Gene had chipped in two or three good to great songs per album rather than the absolute dreck that he was writing at that time.
Revenge is one of their very best albums because for the first time since the seventies Gene's songs were as good as, maybe better than, than Paul's. If you cherry pick Gene's best songs from Animalize, Asylum, Crazy Nights and Hot in the Shade you couldn't even manage enough quality songs for a four track EP!

Eh, to be honest i never thought of Gene as a great songwriter anyway.... but the stuff he wrote in the 80's was far wretched true. But i'm biased.... i dig Ace & Peter but there playing is honestly very minimal, i found the musicians they worked with in 80's WAY better. But they made so many cheesy songs with them, there fun songs but if they really focused. They could have done much better stuff with Vinnie Vincent, Eric Car, John St. John & Bruce Kulick then what they did.
But Revenge was defintley a return to form that imo they haven't matched since. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Big ol' skool KISS fan here. Grew up with them. Though I did stick with them during the 80's I have never replaced their releases from that period to cd. Revenge on up..yes. Animalize through Hot In The Shade, nope. It's similar to how I feel about classic Van Halen and Van Hagar. Side note, can't wait to hear new album Monster from KISS. I enjoyed Sonic Boom quite a bit. And A Different Kind Of Truth from VH. New song is great. Imo .

Paul Stanley was actually my introduction to KISS and after I began to be aware of the 1970s KISS era, I realize how little of a factor Gene actually was. Paul literally had to carry KISS on his back in the 1980s and early 1990s.

That's partly true but for most of the seventies he at least contributed a few good songs per album and he also wrote some Kiss klassics. If you look at the first six studio albums Gene was contributing mostly good-great songs, Love Gun arguably being Gene's best album. For me that is the only seventies album where his songs are on par with Paul's. By the time of Dynasty and Unmasked he started slipping. I find it interesting that on Killers all four new songs were written by Paul with no input at all from Gene. On Creatures of the Night and, to a lesser degree, Lick It Up Gene had some good songs but after that he really went into the crapper until Revenge.
I think it is appropriate that Gene's signature song ("God of Thunder") was actually written by Paul. To me that really shows who the driving force behind Kiss always was. Gene may have a more dominant personality but Paul Stanley has always been the heart of the band. There could still be a Kiss without Gene but without Paul there is no Kiss.

Actually...you could...the four track EP would be: "Burn Bitch Burn", "Any Way You Slice It", "Thief in the Night" and "Love's a Slap in the Face"....his only 4 worth mentioning during that era.
Paul and Ace were always my favorites.....and since Ace left, it's always been Paul for me! Great songwriter...and lets face it...the guy can straight up SANG!! Whenever you say that you can't, that's when you need to be trying.

I've been lucky to meet Paul several times in the past. Very cool and nice guy. He really kept the band moving from 84 to 89 while Gene was out in Hollywood.
His 78 solo LP still holds up today. Good stuff.

vainandy said: He's 60????? Well hell, I guess so because I'm 44 my damn self.....although I still keep thinking I'm in my 30s for some reason. Hell, 60 or not, I'd still lay that hairy motherfucker flat on his back in the bed, spread his legs, and see if I couldn't make those toes spread too. vainandy i respect you as a felow orger and i think you are smart, but what you wrote here is disquasting

Holy crap! Paul Stanley and MY DAD have the same birthday and my dad is only 8 years older! AWESOME!!! Happy Belated Mr. Stanley! I hope you have many more. You're one of my all time favorite rock n roll voices. I'm firmly planted in denial

Fave track from "Lick It Up":
This probably the most "80s glam" Kiss video ever:
I still like this one, who cares if they're not playing live?!
This one IS live:
