I agree, this is a pointless remake.Hollywood is so lazy these days.

Exactly. They have no ideas of their own so they remake and ruin old movies and television series. And they are extremely lazy with this one by casting Shitney in it. They didn't even put 10 minutes of effort to look for someone better. Hell, if no female actresses are available, a man in a fucking dress is better than "her". At least he'd have better legs instead of those chicken legs on her. evillol

Whitney company 'Brownhouse' productions bought the right to Sparkle 13 yrs ago. She is the executive producer of this movie and the soundtrack so nobody picked her or is doing her any favors. I'm sure she has a very strong voice about this movie.

Whitney looks amazing! Don't understand why anyone would think rappers would be on this soundtrack. It's set in 1968, don't think rapper was popular back then. Expect a classic throwback cd. Whitney has always produced good soundtracks. Don't expect any different.

Carmen Ejogo is killing in that pose.

Tika Sumpter Says Whitney Houston "Is Family, For Real!"

Posted January 16, 2012 by Rachel Samara for Global Grind Staff

Tika Smpter takes on the role of Delores in the upcoming remake of Sparkle by Salim and Mara Brock Akil.

Highly anticipated to say the least, Tika will star alongside Jordin Sparks and the legendary Whitney Houston. With her acting career blossoming with red hot roles on Gossip Girl and BET's The Game, Tika is destined to become a household name.

We caught up with Tika to discuss Sparkle and what it was like working with Ms. Houston.

Check out what she had to say below!

Since you’ve blown up on the scene you’ve become friends with everybody, what was it like to work with and be in the same room as Whitney Houston?

Oh my God! It was like a dream come true. My sisters, when they found out I got this part and Whitney was playing my mom...Whitney is like an idol to them and for me, I remember just watching her in her videos and staring at her and how beautiful she is, and her voice and everything.

It was so surreal to have her in the same room, joking around and dancing with us and laughing and talking about deep things sometimes or just hugging us and encouraging us. It was just so cool, I feel so happy to be a part of something that features Whitney in her first acting role in years. I’m excited to be a part of it and I loved every moment of being with Whitney.

You guys looked like a family on set.

Family, for real!

What’s one thing you learned about Whitney?

That she’s freaking funny as anything! She loves to have fun. She loves it. What I did love about Whitney was there was no ego, at all. If you're Whitney Houston you kind of can (have an ego). I don’t care where you've been, you’re Whitney Houston. You can come in the room and say anything, but she had none of that in her at all, at all.

Not one moment of it, and I was blown away by her and her attitude and all the love. I have no reason to have an ego ever in my life if one of the premiere superstars of our day has absolutely no ego. She’s just nice to everybody, very nice to everybody and I took that with me. She’s a human being and I think we forget that, that people are just human and are just trying to get by everyday.

Even that doesn't really stand a chance of matching up the original; McKee and Irene Cara are both pretty good singers in the actual movie, and then the released soundtrack had Aretha Franklin, doing all the songs.

Hah!

They should just throw in the towel, right now. lol

I have no interest in this movie, simply because a remake is pointless. The original is a hell of a movie and it makes absolutely no sense to me, for them to go back and remake it.

And I can already tell it's a turd from that pic of them in the dresses - she's supposed to be playing "Sista"? Oh, no way. No way.

Exactly!

I keep watching this trend of remaking classics, expecting it to end one day, but at this point I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I agree too with SoulAlive that this is about laziness, pure and simple. They don't want to get up off their asses and think of original ideas so at this point they're going back into the past, finding what worked, and just repackaging it - in the process, screwing up the legacy of the originals, and failing to match them in quality.

It's just fucking lame and I wish they'd stop already.

i'll take a vote 10 to 1 that the remake will be a flop. the soulfulness and creative rawness of the original cannot be matched. lonette mckee was beautiful, sexy and totally carried the movie. for those of you who have not seen the original 'sparkle' movie, pls check it out b4 u see the remake.

I agree with you 100%

I'm sure this movie will flop, but I give up as that's not even the point. I'm just tired of them remaking classics. I throw in the towel. I say, let them have them ALL. Let them even do a re make of Purple Rain Or Under The Cherry Moon. Nothing is sacred anyway. I no longer care. It's the younger generation who's going to see this stuff, that will be missing out. We've seen the real deal.

I wish they would just go for the jugular already and re do Purple Rain. Something tell's me that someone has, or already is, thinking about this. They should let me recast it, that would be fun! Especially since I wouldn't need the ability to pick talented people, or even need talented people at all for that matter.

I can already see Bruno Mars as Prince and Kim Kardashian as Apollonia.lol

None of her movies have flopped. This won't be the exception. Trust this will be a hit at the boxoffice where it counts not with critics .

BTW, the original Sparkle was nothing more than a made for tv/lifetime movie. The editing and lighting were so cheaply shot. There's much to be improved. Lonette McKee's portrayal and the music saved it. This wasn't even a hit at the boxoffice. It got a 2nd wind when the movie was released on vhs/dvd. So much for revisionism.

FIRST LOOK: Whitney Houston Back on Screen, inSparkle

Saturday January 21, 2012 11:00 AM EST

FIRST LOOK: Whitney Houston Back on Screen, in Sparkle | Jordin Sparks, Whitney Houston

Jordin Sparks (left) and Whitney Houston, as Sparkle and Emma, in Sparkle

Sony Pictures

It's been more than 15 years since Whitney Houston starred in a big Hollywood movie – 1996'sThe Preacher's Wife – and while fans may be rejoicing about her return to the screen in the upcomingSparkle, the happiest person of all seems to be the pop diva's costar, Jordin Sparks.

"She was so cool and very motherly toward me," says the former American Idol winner, 22, who marks her film debut in the remake of a 1976 movie that originally starred Lonette McKee and Irene Cara. "If I ever looked like I needed something, here she came saying 'Are you okay?' "

No less excited is Houston herself.

"Part of the fun of making this movie is definitely the costumes and the hairstyles," says the star, 48. "The movie is set in 1963, and we had a great wardrobe, hair and makeup person and I loved wearing the outfits."

The film, which chronicles the challenges faced by group of singing sisters once they hit it big, is due Aug. 10 and costars Derek Luke.

Most of all, it is the woman behind "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" and countless other hits who had the greatest impact on Sparks.

"I sang her songs into a hairbrush when I was little," says Sparks. "Now she's acting as my mom and scolding me. It was a dream come true."

The thing is, Hollywood remakes aren't anything new, they've been remaking movies since the silent era. The problem, this generation of screenwriters, producers, directors, and editors, they don't have ANY FUCKIN' TALENT. As the Entertainer mentioned, this movie was a low budget hot mess 35 years ago. I'll see it tho', I'm sure my beautician will be showing it a week befo' it opens up in theaters. lol

Sista has the 52" Vizio TV with Bose surround sound. popcorn

I'm impressed our "DVD man"... who use to be known as 8-track man, then the cassette man, then the VHS man, has really stepped up his game. His shit is in HD, this isn't our father's bootleg products. lol I'm sure the next for him, will be "the Cloud".
