how is that first piece of trash even in the same sentence as the other two masterpieces?

"Butterfly" is not even in the same league as the other two. It has no business being compared to VR or ROL, PERIOD. Lol.
My vote goes to "Ray of Light". "Velvet Rope" is great, but it does have some filler on there. I find ROL to be a better, more cohesive album overall but you can't go wrong with either album.

Ray of Light really hasn't dated well after hearing it again recently and it still suffers from severe overplay from 1998. I did love it at the time even despite Madonna's god awful live performances during promotion.
I own Butterfly but to be honest have never played it all the way through.
I always had problems with a lot of The Velvet Rope especially as her rabid fans hailed Janet as the second coming despite some horrendous crap on it. BUT, overall I think it's the best put together album, the most interesting and aside from maybe 25% of it after the halfway mark, it has dated very well for me.

Blech. How about none. Three of the most overrated women in Music. Never was into Janet or Madonna, and Mariah should've stuck to making pop ballads. Her music from 1997-present isn't that great, outside of a few gems.

I love the Drownworld tour, but there were aspects that felt to cold(?) But I think that's partly what she wanted, love the visuals though
I love a lot of Mariah's House remixes with David Morales for Fantasy Honey & Butterfly My All

TVR is the best out of these three for me hands down. 'What About?' is still my all time favorite Janet Jackson song followed closely by 'Together Again' (the Jimmy Jam deeper remix). Great album...really her best IMHO.
Butterfly is an okay Mariah album but not my favorite of hers...I think 'Daydream', 'Emancipation of Mimi', and 'Glitter' are her best albums thus far but that's just me.
ROL as an album was okay...love 'The Power of Goodbye', 'Frozen', and 'Little Star'; but, 'Ray of Light' the song is one of those songs I hated the first time I heard it and the video just cemented that hate for me. It took that one song to make me stop really following Madonna...yeah it was like that for me.

I wish we could ban mj and beyonce from this thread and focus on my original question.
Anyways I love Velvet Rope start to finish with only several not being on repeat for me, and it's aged the best from all of her albums. What About and You are probably some of her best songs.
Though I liked Butterfly when it came out, it took years for me to enjoy it as a whole album start to finish, and the ballads have aged really well on it.
Ray of Light fits in well with today's music for the most part and of the three albums, I think this one has developed a younger following for those who got into madonna in later years. I don't enjoy it as a whole album, but I like a majority of the songs, and the ones I do are fabulous and a new sound for Madonna.
Winners: Velvet Rope and Butterfly. [Edited 1/19/12 16:20pm]

Is this a battle of the singles or albums? Is Butterfly a Mariah Carey album?

my comments may be "disqualified" for this reason, but i've never heard Ray of Light (only Frozen, and the title track i think) or Butterfly in their entirety (can't even tell u what Mariah songs came from that album). needless to say i can't imagine either are better than TVR. for me, save the lesbian Rod Stewart remake song, nothing is skippable on this album. even the hidden track is dope and Special should've been longer. can't imagine Mariah or Madonna keeping my attention over a full album like that, let alone over a decade later! just sayin'

Velvet Rope isn't perfect. It peters out towards the end, but picks back up with the last song. The production is varied and the lyrics span a number of topics.
Ray of Light has "Shanti/Ashtangi" on it, which is one of her worst. Switch it out with "Has to Be" and it'd be a perfect album.
Both meant a lot to the teenage me. Eh. I'll go with Ray of Light.

Hmmm this is hard, I love all three albums. I'm going to go with The Velvet Rope though. On a side note, Whitney's MLIYL was pretty good too. I think the diva's all released their best albums in 97/98.

I didnt bring up MJ... I referenced a song that was similiar to the title of an album mentioned in the thread.... people quickly moved on from that...

Ray of Light wins easily for me. It still sounds as fresh and interesting as it did when it was released. It's far and away Madonna's best album. The Velvet Rope is a good album, but I find it overlong and a little overrated. For my money, it isn't in the same league as Rhythm Nation, Control, or even Janet. AFAIC, Mariah Carey is a singles artist (and not even a great one). Her albums are packed with filler and Butterfly is no different. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Not really a 'Butterfly' or Mariah fan, but I wouldn't even call Butterfly her best album (I'd put Music Box, Daydream, Emancipation.., E=MC2 all above it). I find the album to be fairly boring, typical 90s r&b music. Nothing special whatsoever (except, maybe her voice).
Not a big Madonna fan, either, but I prefer her 90s music. 'Ray Of Light' and 'Frozen' are two of her best songs.
But, The Velvet Rope is easily the best (imo), especially lyrically. The songs are a lot more interesting. I would consider it Janet's best album, by far. I love: "Velvet Rope", "You", "Got 'Til It's Gone", "Go Deep", "My Need", "Together Again", "What About", "Every Time", "Rope Burn" and "Special". Damn - I didn't even realize how much I loved this album 'til now.

The Velvet Rope, hands down! If I can jump back to 1997-1998, this record and era spoke to me more, showed me a whole 'nother world, and freaked my 6-year old ass out when I first heard it. Mariah really hadn't hit home to me, even though Butterfly turned out to be her best album and gave us the complete metamorphosis to her "new style and sound." Madonna gave me a brand new insight to her life at that point with the singles "Ray Of Light," "The Power of Goodbye," and "Frozen," but she hadn't hit the ball running for me either.
So, Janet takes the cake for me, as I had The Velvet Rope in my household before Butterfly and Ray Of Light was in my possession. A more interesting thread would be Mariah's Mimi vs. Mary's The Breakthrough vs. Jan's 20 Y.O. [Edited 1/20/12 22:18pm] Check me out and add me on:

Being a big fan of all 3 women I pick: Velvet Rope (Janet's Masterpiece)> Ray Of Light (Madonna's Masterpiece)> Butterfly (Not her masterpiece but still a great album)
