Classic songs like this will never die. IMO Van Halen was the best rock band of the '80s, Bar none!!!

It seems to me some fans don't like variety, yes VH the sound changed when Sammy was in. But it was still Halen & you could hear it, they added keyboards, pianos, blues guitar, choirs. The DLR years where fantastic! he was the ultimate frontman. Dave wasn't a bad singer but he didn't have great vocals. Sammy can sing, it added something to the band.

DLR is the crazy hype man, the most killer frontman for a stage show & his humor was a big plus

Sammy was sensitive, could sing and brought more artistic depth to the band.

Both eras are very different, and both are fantastic & helped shape one of the best RNR bands ever, so what if Sammy does love songs? or doesn't do the splits on stage. Let Sammy be Sammy & Dave Be Dave

I like both the DLR years and the Sammy Hagar years; they each bring a different side of Van Halen.

"1984" is still my favorite VH album overall.

Nothing wrong with that nod

1984 is a fine ass record lol, and of course it was huge. I think it's fantastic they did a fine last album with Roth, then did a kick ass album with Sammy right after that. And even with the whole changing singers issue, the album went number 1, and sold almost 9 million copes....

So idk people couldn't have been that unhappy about Sammy lol

Just to be clear, I was being sarcastic with my post.

I like the two tunes I posted and see the benefits in both versions of the band.

Sammy's intro solo on this is great. Better than the solo on the LP.

The "Catherine" vid is great too. I love seeing Ed liqoured up and cocaine-meth'd out.

I prefer the Van Hagar years! Even though I like Panama, Ain't talking about love, Running with the devil and Jump quite a lot, the band never interested me with DLR as a singer!

For me the Sammy years are not necessarily inferior because of Sammy but more because the music got a whole lot less interesting. Any of the Dave era albums (yes, even Diver Down) can be played over and over without becoming boring but the Sammy era albums have much more filler and are much easier to tire of.

Van Halen were like virtually every other band, exciting in the beginning until they reached a peak (1984) and then every subsequent album is inferior to the album that preceded it.

I respectfully disagree. If I had to pick a best Sammy album I would take For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (yes, I am contradicting myself).
