That song is about as offensive as some dude singing about internment camps and the Japanese and then referring to a girl as his 'little geisha' or something; and he probably actually thought that was supposed to be flattering... neutral

It's funny. For YEARS I never could understand what Mick was saying (or singing) in this song. But when I read the lyrics online I was like "wow".

I remember when folks were in a uproar when Mick said "Black girls just wanna get..."

I love the Stones but I don't even know if a song like this could even be released today.

Like I said before, I don't think his intention was to offend, but yeah... lyrically it's definitely one of those "...The fuck?!" moments.

Most likely not, but I think people need to tread carefully when discussing race, because it can get pretty crazy.

Yea Me to I exactly didnt have NO IDEA what it was about because I usually post some of the lyrics with the video and when I read it it...omg

But he was like really like.... well he liked to talk about race not sure if he was full blown racist or anything because there is another song he made that talked offensively about African American women.....that got banned : /

I just posted the song so we could talk about it and give opinions on it not to be offensive...

I am a black girl by the way LOL...

Yeah, I know your intent wasn't to offend, either.

I still find the song in and of itself offensive.

I fully expect someone to come along shortly and say I'm making a big deal out of nothing or being too 'sensitive', but let's be real here - a lot of times people don't get the insensitivity in a comment unless you swap stuff out for them and make in specific in a way they can relate to.

I never took Mick as being a racist at all. He's dated black women (Marsha Hunt) and has a daughter with her. He's truly embraced the culture (music, clothes, etc) so he's cool with me.

I think the song back then didn't really strike a chord because it was played on rock radio and not the R&B stations (at that time).

The song was simply a product of its time.

I remember hearing a quote from Sidney Poitier's For Love of Ivy where Beau Bridges said to him innocently in one of the scenes, that he thought all "spades are good at getting it on" or something to that effect.

Like it has been mentioned earlier, they embraced black culture, sloppy-wise notwithstanding. Same case with John Lennon doing "Woman Is The Nigger of The World".

Frankly, I find it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less offensive than say "One In A Million" by Guns N' Roses. Now Axel knew & meant what he was saying, and didn't pull no cop pleas either, even though he supposedly gets upset about being referred to as a racist. He even explained why he said what he said, yet you see some folks - even posting here - copping pleas with the old "Axel is not a racist, he's just a stupid asshole" line. Yeah a stupid asshole who happens to be a racist as well, GTFOH rolleyes lol

That doesnt justify the lyrics of the song because people can interpret it differently... .. its not like its a song like Billie Holidays strange fruit.... Brown Sugar is a fast place rock and roll song about slave plantations, classification of slaves (in and outdoor slave) and black women.

I knew he had to be sleeping with a black women because he constantly references sexual things regarding black women in songs made in this era...

The name of the other song is titled "Some Girls" which got banned on radios because in the song lyrics he said "Black girls like to f*** alnight " now thats racist.. :/ Damn.. now I feel kinda bad because I exactly really like Rolling Stones and listen them all the time : /

Today this song would be banned for sure.

But I believe it was a product of the times. Jagger was really exposing a "little-known dirty" secret about the white men of those times and during slavery.

While I respect everyone's opinion positive and negative, I'm not losing sleep over a 40 year old rock song. They said it, they sang it, it's done.

Ima be honest I do love the song to.. I just had NO IDEA what it was about until I exactly researched the lyrics... Ive listened to Rolling Stones since before I could tie my shoes...

Now that I can understand better now I am older, it just gives me a different perspective... They might not necessary be racist but it does glorify alot shit that when down back during that era (Slavery)...

Reading over it again.. its not really racist per se (but I can see how it could be offensive, which it is.... who the fuck would write a song about raping a black womeN and calling her sex brown sugar ?) but he goes into talking about slavery and throughout the song describes how slave masters would rape black women.

I guess maybe its not racist more so artistically displaying a known fact about Slavery... But lines like "Brown sugar" and "how come you taste so good brown sugar" minimizes the degrading nature of what they are saying and instead glorifies it like its something good to do... Thats just my thoughts on it

Lyrics

Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields,
Sold in a market down in new orleans.
Scarred old slaver know he's doin alright.
Hear him whip the women just around midnight.
Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good
(a-ha) brown sugar, just like a young girl should
A-huh.

Drums beating, cold english blood runs hot,
Lady of the house wondrin where it's gonna stop.
House boy knows that he's doin alright.
You should a heard him just around midnight.
Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good
(a-ha) brown sugar, just like a black girl should
A-huh.

I bet your mama was a tent show queen, and all her boy
Friends were sweet sixteen.
Im no schoolboy but I know what I like,
You should have heard me just around midnight.

Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good
(a-ha) brown sugar, just like a young girl should.

I said yeah, I said yeah, I said yeah, I said
Oh just like a, just like a black girl should.

I said yeah, I said yeah, I said yeah, I said
Oh just like, just like a black girl should

All I can say is that it's the Stones. They were badass and they didn't give a fuck.

"Brown Sugar" is just one example. It's their whole career. Nobody can match them.

I love the Beatles, but compare songs like "Brown Sugar" or about a dozen others to the twee, innocent stuff the Beatles were doing. Different worlds cool

The stones were pretty off the wall, but I never took them to be racist in the slightest.

But I did take them to be offensive and crude and shocking. It's hard to imagine now because they are so corporate, but the were the wildest band of the time.

I get the sense they just liked to say some crazy stuff. And as is the case with this song, the sound of the lyrics was as important as the meaning since many of us never really knew what they were saying anyway. But the lyrics actually sound great with the music.

Yeah, god forbids a discussion takes place in a discussion board nuts lol Should a big debate happens, I welcome it.

I don't know about ya'll, but I came here expecting just a youtube clip and a bunch of co-signing cools and headbangs, it certainly is refreshing to have some dialog about music we enjoy, and it sure beats complaining about Beyonce's "fake pregnancy".
