Solange: "New Album Has A Lot of Songs About Sex"
January 13, 2012
"There's a lot of songs about sex," Solange says of her upcoming album. For V Magazine's V75 music issue, Solange shares details of her upcoming album, which "she funded and managed herself."
"It's the kind of record you put on when your man is coming over, when you're with your girls," She added. "There are songs that make you wanna dance because we were kind of partying our way through the record, but it's very chill."
The singer worked with Pharrell Wiliams, Vincent Vendetta of the Midnight Juggernauts, Ariel Reichstadt and Houston Texas native such as Solange, Devonté "Dev" Hynes. "Dev was a complete surprise, his role changed substantially throughout the process," Solange says of the singer-songwriter who's written for Florence and the Machine, the Chemical Brothers and more. "It's very rare that you work with someone with whom you have this creative chemistry, it's almost like a relationship. You have a sort of musical love affair.
Solange continued to talk of the soundscapes that lace the album, meshing old and new, "My references for the record were all Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, not just their typical Janet [Jackson] and Prince stuff, but SOS Band and their b-sides with Chaka Khan. At first the songs were really dark because I had a premonition before the record that I was going to die. I was having panic attacks and wiling out."
Aside from writing, recording and releasing an album all on her own, Solange recently signed a modeling contract with Next Model Management. "Artistic expression is invaluable to me in all walks of my career and I am so excited to continue to develop this path along with such an amazing team at Next Model Management," Solange told Vogue UK, "I feel right at home working with people who have worked beside such creative forces in the world."

love everything about this girl so I'm looking forward to this. I'm particularly curious about the SOS Band-inspired tracks. "what's that book where they're all behind the wardrobe?"

Let's you know right off the jump the album will be contrived, formulaic, unwitty, boring, staid and overwrought.

I don't think she should go the sex route that's where Kelly Rowland lost me. Solange already got her own little style it's going to seem force now.

Ugh I hate this trick just as much as I hate her big sister. I hope she flops into oblivion.

This girl really surprised me on her last album. I liked it better than any song her sister ever made. She is very eclectic & has a unique style to her . That last album "Sol-Angle and the Hadley St. Dreams" was fire... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Wow... I'm so impresses... Nobody ver been on that field before! She's so original... I've always seen Solange as the "indie" version of Beyoncé, collaborating with some of the greatest indie-rock groups (Dirty Projectors, Of Montreal...), but it seems she wants her share of the mainstream pie too. Well she can sing about all the sex she wants as long as she does it in a different way, not another electro-dirtysouth-inflluenced garbage album. I have high expectations from her cause I truly think she's talented and she can be more "experimental" in her music... Everybody is somebody, but nobody wants to be themselves.

I like her, but I read the thread title and immediately thought, "Most records, do". [Edited 1/15/12 5:33am] 비

WTF! I hope this girl is kidding! She is way more intelligent than that. Just what the world needs..another black american performer who only raps or sings about different ways of fuckin'. Sounds like idiots got to her & talked her out of going the intelligent, interesting, artistic , Cee-Lo/Badu-esque route she seemed to be headed towards with her 2010 song "leaks". Damn, I was really looking forward to her 3rd album.

It sounds like you all are reacting to an out-of-context line used as headline to sell the article. I hope she does do an 80s-sounding record with a modern twist on it. She always seemed more sexual than her sister and frankly, I have always liked her material better.

An album with songs about sex? How shocking! How groundbreaking!
she's really pushing the envelope here.

I kind of liked this little ditty she wrote for Kelly Rowland's first release:
