This ain't 1986 or whenever Johnson's album came out, during a time when album

sales were integral to an recording artist's career. Today, when digital sales out-

number physical units, it may be the norm that a recording artist, in order to even

match the physical units sold of a goofy white boy in a pastel suit, needs to have 5

hit singles to match numbers.

Y'all shouldn't even trip though: when's the last time Tiffany, Martika, Paula Abdul or

Debbie Gibson were remembered for anything? Rihanna will justifiably be placed

alongside these have beens in about 15 years.

I like her. She's the only one out of the new crop of pop girls (including Beyonce and Gaga) that I actually find interesting.

I'm not generally a fan of RiRi, but who here hasn't seen widespread self-congratulation among pop acts? Rick James, Sananda Maitreya, Prince and a whole slew of other artists celebrated here all went around at one time or another claiming themselves to be the best thing since sliced bread. Just goes with the territory.

And when she says nobody is in her league, she's correct in a way: What other pop princess right now is rocking the sort of punkish black girl style with even half the success of Rihanna? Only Beyoncé can touch her where revenue is concerned, and she's a markedly different artist -- older, a more refined edge, a somewhat richer repertoire, etc. Rihanna enjoys her own little market space right now, originality and sustainability being somewhat secondary to that point.

I love how folks act all brand new when some artist they don't like starts bragging about their status. Least in Rihanna's case, she can brag because she's got hits coming out of her, I assume, lovely anus. It's nothing new. Of course someone else will come and take her spot when the industry milks it dry as it always happen but for now she's here to stay for the time period.

Well she benefits from the times that we are in clearly, not saying she wouldnt have hits in any era but she would most def have someone else along side her with the same amount if not more, her bragging is all self manufactured though, if not for this thread who the hell knew she said this? Im not hearing this qoute anywhere in the mainstream which shows relevance in what she says and how important any of these music artists are, they are more known for what they wear and say than for the music they put out.

Christmas Eve I was kind of coerced into wrapping presents with my sister and she decided to put on Beyonce and it was like an aural assault - very over the top, too many vocal runs and shrieking and shouting and...literal ear rape.

It translates over into her visual presentation too - everything is too much. The jewelry is too big and garish, the clothes are too loud and flashy, everything is always overkill.

I think the phrase 'richer repertoire' regarding her catalog is a bit of an exaggeration and overstatement - let's be real here, most of her songs are about such 'mature, rich' topics as :

booty

getting bills paid

throwing out cheating guys

Beyonce is a beautiful girl, really. And absolutely, totally talented, but I think your descriptors more accurately fit someone like Sade.

Point taken. But, of course, my description of Beyoncé is relative to Rihanna... in part because Rihanna herself first made the comparison. I wouldn't put the likes of Sade in the same city, let alone the same discussion thread, as either of them. That said, compared to Rihanna's hell-cum-banana boat bleating , Bey's vocals sound like a heavenly brook trickling gently over rocks.

Moreover, songs about booty (namely, one's own as it moves on a dancefloor), getting bills paid and throwing out cheating guys are still less schlock, I'd argue, than songs about booty by way of tired automobile metaphors, drinking one's concerns away and repeatedly not parting ways with some scummy guy... until one partner destroys the other.

...And I'd love to hear Rihanna even approach the Ave Maria.
