1991 was a great year for music. It was also a turning point in my life. These are the two albums I remember most from 1991. Music that would play a major role in my future and albums that I consider to be amongt the greatest ever recorded.

I always thought it was one of the very best years for new releases.

My favorites from 1991 were:

  1. Nirvana - Nevermind
  2. U2 - Achtung Baby
  3. Prince - Diamonds and Pearls
  4. Michael Jackson - Dangerous
  5. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
  6. Guns N Roses - Use Your Illusion
  7. Pearl Jam - Ten

In that order

There were other good albums, but the above albums are all 4/5 star classics for me.

The only year that I think tops 1991 for new music was maybe 1965 (two Beatles albums, two Bob Dylan albums; three Beach Boys albums, multiple Rolling Stones albums [can't remember how many]; "A Love Supreme", "My Generation", "Highway 61 Revisited", "Rubber Soul", etc...)

Was about to say, i may get flamed for this. But 1991 is in my top 25 music years... i mean just so much good music! and not to mention constant good, deep music. Experimental & every genre imaginable getting played on radio & MTV

Yes! I would even go as far as to say, it was the last amazing year in music! A lot of high profile and great artists released great albums that year, definitely a year that changed a lot for me, musicwise.... a while ago I thought about making a thread about it... but then I thought... why bother.. too lazy! wink Glad you did though! Can't believe that it's over 20 years already... many of those albums are a soundtrack to my life.

Yeah, the Cher one is not as great as "Heart of stone", which was the first CD I ever bought (later that day though I also bought Queen's "Live Magic"), but at the time I really liked that one.

It was a great year for music.
I just love these albums:

Metallica by Metallica
Out of Time by R.E.M.
Dangerous by Michael Jackson
Use Your Illusion by Guns N' Roses
Achtung Baby by U2

smile
Each of them in my Top 40 list of favorite albums of all time. Metallica and MJ released my favorite albums in their discography.

But the most influential album of 1991 will always be Nevermind by Nirvana

1991 not only was the best year for popular music since 1987: it was also, propably, the last GREAT year for popular music.

1992 and 1993 were very good, but not as good as 1991. The downhill slowly started in 1994, and despite some occasional great quality in 1998, 2000 and 2001, the industry hit rock bottom in 2005/06...

now (since 2004) we have some good albums, but not great/good years anymore...

my opinion, of course

Sorry to be "that guy" but The Immaculate Collection was released in November of 1990, not 1991.

1991 was a great year. I agree with JoeTyler that 1987 was another great year. Other than that you would probably have to go back to the '70s or maybe the very early '80s to find years with that many amazing albums.

It was a fantastic year indeed. I was lucky enough to be 14 in 1991, and I remember it as a true turning point. I'd been buying music since 1987, but 1991 marked a huge change for me.

From that year, I only miss great britpop records, which would come later: Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife, Suede, Dog Man Star, Morning Glory, Different Class, Wake Up Boo!...

Hate to disagree with you, but I will, respectfully. Tthis thread does in fact remind me how much the '90's sucked.

1991 will be remembered as The Year Nirvana Killed Rock and Roll.

1991 was amazing, but, in my opinion, 1995 was also fantastic. The great year of Britpop and the Bristol sound, people like Tindersticks and P.J. Harvey making brilliant albums, plus the resurrection of Bowie (Outside), Prince and Michael Jackson making strong records (The Gold Experience and History)... I cannot find another impressive year in music after 1995.

I get where you are coming from, there were some good rock bands whose careers were virtually ended by alternative/grunge music, but if it wasn't Nirvana some other band would have led the very same charge. Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins and others would have made the break through if Nirvana had not.

I love 1991 because of the following albums:

Dangerous- MJ (his masterpiece)

Emotions- MJ (The title track is still my favorite song of hers)

Diamonds And Pearls- Prince (The good tracks are amazing! The bad tracks are just plain awful)

Immaculate Collection- Madonna (Introduces sexy Madge we'd be hearing a lot from in 1992-3)

But I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate

HATE

Nirvanna, they pretty much pioneered the worst genre of music ever made.

U hate Nevermind? fine, I'm not a big fain either, but with this thread alone you can clearly see that 1991 offered A LOT MORE than just Nevermind rolleyes

and yeah, I just don't care for american 90s rock (I love Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, and that's all) but then again you have the amazing Britpop/British Rock which ruled during the mid-90s

I'm curious what was so great about Rock & Roll between 1985 & 1991 to declare it was anything but a mercy killing.

Or when we are going to remember it as such. It's been 20 years! Enough time has passed to determine whether this was the last remotely interesting - whether revolutionary or deconstructive thing - to happen to rock music. I tend to think it is a little of both, and what happened to rock music 'dying' after that has less to do with the bands on the scene than it does with technology and the music industry.

Thank you!

I understand you don't like Nirvana...

but did you see all the other albums i posted? that is close minded to say there was no great music in the 90's especially 1991

Hip Hop

Rock

Pop

Grunge

Country

Electronica

New Jack Swing

R&B

Metal

Dance

Reggae

Hell even jazz & some blues

There was huge variety of what was popular & versatile artists

Don't let one band kill a whole decade for you. Especially one that was onl around for 4 years 7 a music style that was only really popular from 91-95

Absolutely, there were a lot of crap bands circa 1985-1991 just like there were a lot of crap bands in the wake of Nirvana's/"alternative" music's break through. The thing that bugged me was that overnight it seemed like every rock band had to sound like Nirvana (grim and not necessarily much fun). I like a lot of the "alternative" bands but I also liked a lot of the "hair metal" bands. Too much of any one genre is not good. It was great that in the '90s we got a different kind of rock music and a lot of people heard it but it was not so great that fun and upbeat rock music virtually disappeared for most of the decade. Thank goodness for Britpop! Otherwise I probably would have topped myself by 1996.

As far as mainstream radio goes, there was a lot of adult contemporary ruining things and slow to midtempo shit hop was rearing it's ugly head also. This is the ONLY kind of stuff I liked in 1991......
