Robert Dickey, a singer/guitarist best known for his work on the Bobby and James Purify top ten single "I'm Your Puppet," died December 29 in Tallahassee, Florida. He was 72. No cause of death was given.

After touring with the likes of Otis Redding, Dickey joined his cousin James Purify in the mid-1960s when producer Papa Don Schroeder brought the group to Fame studios to record their signature ballad "'I'm Your Puppet," co-written by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham.

The duo would also record "Let Love Come Between Us" and their cover of the Five Du-Tones' "Shake A Tail Feather" also became popular.

In a 2000 interview with the The Tallahassee Democrat, Dickey said he despised singing 'I'm Your Puppet.' "I hated it. It was originally intended to be the B-side. But things got changed," he said. "I sang it for 23 hours straight [in the studio]; that's why I hate it."

In the 1970s, Dickey would leave his professional music career but continued to sing and play guitar with his church and as a member of the Bethlehem Male Singers.

And all this time, I thought they were siblings, and not cousins. Robert Dickey used the stage name Bobby Purify.
