Stop the Presses: ReRe is singing in honor of someone other than herself.

I see it but I don't believe it...The last time The Queen of Soul sang in Tribute to another performer was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1996 when "Essence" asked her to sing to BabyFace...She sang "It Hurts like Hell" better that night than she did on the CD...

Has Aretha sang in Tribute to any of her female Diva peers? NOPE

Has she ever been asked? Probably by Producers who don't know The Queen of the Divas don't sing to female performers...

Did BET have to twist her arm to sing in Stevie Wonder's Honor? Nope because she loves Stevie.

What did Aretha say when "BET Honors" informed her that Patti LaBelle will be performing as well? "Patti will NOT sing before me on Saturday night and I'll try not to drop a BBQ-Rib bone on the stage when I'm done singing."

Did Aretha threaten "BET-Honors" Damanding they honor her before Patti in the near future? That is the ONLY way they could get her to perform on the show...

**"BET Honors" tapes LIVE Saturday Jan 14th....First Lady Michelle Obama has been added to the show and will probably pay Tribute to her favorite singer Stevie...This will probably be the best Tribute of the series...You don't get any better than a Night featuring Aretha, Patti, Maya, Mariah and our own Michelle Obama...

Michelle Obama

First Lady Michelle Obama will be one of the stars who brighten the annual BET Honors award program, which will air on the network on Feb. 13. The star-studded event, now in its fifth year, honors the outstanding achievements of extraordinary legends in music, literature, entertainment, media, service and education. Acclaimed actress Gabrielle Union will be the evening’s host.

This year’s honorees include poet/author Maya Angelou (Literary Arts), musician Stevie Wonder (Musical Arts), songstress Mariah Carey (Entertainer), filmmaker Spike Lee (Media), the Tuskegee Airmen (Service) and inspirational coach and mentor Beverly Kearney (Education).

The BET Honors 2012 also will feature performances by Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Common, Terrence Howard and other stars from the music and film industries. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit Metro TeenAIDS, a community health organization dedicated to supporting young people in the fight against HIV/AIDS through education, support and advocacy.

Aretha is only about the men, LOL. She has only had good rapports if you will with: Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan, Nancy Wilson, Karen Clark-Sherrad and Vanessa Bell-Armstrong basically.

She loves her some Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, KennyFace (as she calls him), Eddie LeVert, Ronald Isley...

Clive Davis is trying to get her to tribute Ella and Sarah on her next album - good luck.

^^^^^

She has spoken very highly of Nippy and Mimi as well. I heard a few years ago, she was including Mimi's "Hero" in some of her live shows.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - First Lady Michelle Obama took the stage at an awards ceremony Saturday with poet Maya Angelou, performers Stevie Wonder and Mariah Carey, and other African American celebrities who called the black community to civic action, starting with voting in the 2012 presidential election.

The taping of the BET Honors, hosted by Black Entertainment Television was held at the historic Warner Theatre in downtown Washington.

It brought out stars including singers Patti LaBelle and queen of soul Aretha Franklin, as well as Washington political figures such as former Secretary of State Colin Powell and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

The politics-meets-glamour event fits in with the recently ramped up efforts by Obama to help her husband, President Barack Obama, win a challenging re-election bid in November.

Obama, in a crimson, one-shouldered gown, presented the Literary Arts award to Angelou and appealed to the crowd to follow Angelou's example as an activist.

"It is not enough merely to seek greatness for ourselves, we must help others discover greatness within themselves. We need to reach down and reach out, and give back and lift others," she said.

Speakers at the ceremony praised the Obamas for being the first black family in the White House and told the audience to "vote like your life depends on it."

"We have to exercise our constitutional right to vote. And there's a man out there with a vision for this country and he intends to finish what he started," said Beverly Kearney, head coach of the University of Texas' women's track team.

Those honored were filmmaker Spike Lee, World War Two Tuskegee airmen, as well as Angelou, Kearney, Wonder and Carey.

Obama stayed for the three-hour taping during which several acts had to be done over. While posing on stage with the award winners an audience member yelled, "We love you, First Lady!"

"Just her coming out and having a good time, it comes off like she's just like the rest of us. Since she connects, it's going to be helpful to her in helping Barack get another term," said Sonya Lowery, 41, of Maryland.
