Look's like it was enough for you to enjoy 1991 then lol

I'm curious what was so great about Rock & Roll between 1985 & 1991 to declare it was anything but a mercy killing.

Or when we are going to remember it as such. It's been 20 years! Enough time has passed to determine whether this was the last remotely interesting - whether revolutionary or deconstructive thing - to happen to rock music. I tend to think it is a little of both, and what happened to rock music 'dying' after that has less to do with the bands on the scene than it does with technology and the music industry.

Absolutely, there were a lot of crap bands circa 1985-1991 just like there were a lot of crap bands in the wake of Nirvana's/"alternative" music's break through. The thing that bugged me was that overnight it seemed like every rock band had to sound like Nirvana (grim and not necessarily much fun). I like a lot of the "alternative" bands but I also liked a lot of the "hair metal" bands. Too much of any one genre is not good. It was great that in the '90s we got a different kind of rock music and a lot of people heard it but it was not so great that fun and upbeat rock music virtually disappeared for most of the decade. Thank goodness for Britpop! Otherwise I probably would have topped myself by 1996.

I love hair metal & grunge & alternative as well. But i think each genre had that issue, there where a TON of throw away hair metal bands overnight...

Strangely some of my favorite hair metal bands like Dokken quit right when hair metal was HUGE and Ratt was consedired hair metal but had there big hit heyday before hair metal got huge, 1987-90 was the heyday or hair metal where it was getting lots of top 40's

And grunge from 1991-95 same thing, to many throwaway grunge bands, then it was the nu metal craze & throwaway nu metal. Then stuff like emo in the 00's was all the rage for a few years.

hmph! I will not stand idle and allow you to besmirch the good names of the likes of Badlands, Bang Tango, Danger Danger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Tora Tora and Trixter. They are all fantastic, it is the rest of the world's fault if they can not see the genius of these amazing bands!

But i bet you lots of cash if i go to there videos, tons of people young & old will do the usual this is real music, back at a time when music was real lol

I actually saw someone comment on a Poison video saying how music will never be as good as it was when Poison was around and it got 67 likes razz

Darm it, once again my attempt at humour fails. I just tried to pick some random crappy '80s bands and pretended to be upset that anyone would dare suggest that they were crap.

I promise I will try harder next time. wink

1991 not only was the best year for popular music since 1987: it was also, propably, the last GREAT year for popular music.

1992 and 1993 were very good, but not as good as 1991. The downhill slowly started in 1994, and despite some occasional great quality in 1998, 2000 and 2001, the industry hit rock bottom in 2005/06...

now (since 2004) we have some good albums, but not great/good years anymore...

my opinion, of course

^^ nod

'91 was also a pivotal year for me - old enough to be interested in pop music and buy it w/ my allowance. The Symbol album the next year was what got me into Prince.

Lots of exemplary albums posted here - like the ones posted by OP.

But I also liked this one, and it was quite huge:
