One of the last great R & B songs before rap/hip-hop completely took over.

the best new jack + traditional R&B fusion I ever heard

If you compare Destiny's Child to En Vogue, then you can understand why 00s music is just not as good...

What a tragedy these girls split up. They should have released so much more music sad

En Vogue never broke up. Dawn left and came back several times though. Maxine left for a little while a few years ago. Even Cindy temporarily left when she was pregnant. They had a couple of replacements Amanda Cole & Rhona Bennett (who each did one album with the group), but they're long gone. The group has been performing all this time. Right now the original 4 are performing. They're supposed to be currently recording an album, but Dawn is not participating on the album, just the concerts.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

No problem. Like a lot of old groups they've been doing oldies festivals throughout the years. Their last album came out in 2004 though. Here is an interview with Dawn from August 2011. The 2nd video is the group doing a show in one of B.B. King's clubs.

"En Vogue", the group we all loved broke up. They had different incarnations, including Amanda and Rhona but En vogue Broke up after the 2nd album. Was not the same, technicality or not.

Wonderin why Dawn would do live but nor recordings. More contract drama?

PS - Thank you for that link to the BB show. It was FANTASTIC! clapping

lol Not all of them, technically, just the ones I could remember. But just enough to get my dad pretty upset. I think it was bad enough that I was writing to some little snot nosed fresh boy in my 2nd grade class that he was "never gonna get it" falloff I still remember the look on his face when he scolded me for asking him to mail my letter.

I was truly too smart for my own good sometimes. lol

Dawn is on EV3 though. You can hear her voice on most of the songs and she's on the songwriting credits too. She's just not in the photos. It's like Bobby Brown is on All For Love, but he quit before it was released, and Jermaine Jackson is on the Moving Violation album. He had left the J5 right after the album was released. Marlon did Jermaine's parts on TV appearances for the album. En Vogue is not the 1st group to have members leave. Look at The Temptations, Van Halen, and Yes. lol

Sure, but some would argue that En Vogue took far too long to release their third album. By the time they did the music scene had undergone some drastic changes and many of their fans had moved on.

Retread of Hold ON. Did the same person write both tunes?

Yeah, James Brown. razz Both songs sampled The Payback.

I never understood why. The sample is hardly crucial to the song, they easily could have come up with a new guitar bit that would have suited the song. Seems like they just used a James Brown sample because it was the trendy thing to do.

I think the thing I love most about this group is that vocally, they're all very talented. Each one of these ladies could stand on their own (and in Dawn's case, she has), but together, they're a powerhouse. There is no weak link in group, but there's no frontwoman, either. It isn't a Destiny's Child setup with the lead singer getting all the shine and the rest serving as backup (with the occasional solo). They all get their chance to shine. But all of 'em together? Can't nobody fuck with that, especially not today!

"And now it's time for a breakdown!" Damn, I love that part!! music

LOOOOVE this song, first heard it in early 93 while vacationing in Florida. It was on the radio. Later on, I had it on a compilation CD and eventually heard the Funky Divas album.

Their follow up should have not been the Runaway Love LP, it should have been a full album with Whatta Man being their first single though I know it's Salt N Pepa's song. They sound amazing on there. Don't Let Go was so amazing though and a big hit, maybe they should have gone for that sound more instead of an r&b/hip hop sound that was slowed down like everyone else's.

This was one of their better videos. I like the harmony and the beat but it does sound like a faster version of Hold On.

Cindy's body was bangin!!! How many of y'all remember Prince crushing on her. wink

Maxine Jones said once that Foster & McElroy were "tired and played out" and she had little interest in working with them. lol
