I like Prince and I even like his singing however I would never place him in a TOP 10 greatest vocalist or singer of all time list.

But this is a list of favorite, but not the greatest singers (otherwise my list would be a little different, too, that something like this: 1. Freddie Mercury. 2. Robert Plant . 3. Steve Perry. 4. Elvis Presley. 5. Aretha Franklin. 6. George Michael . 7. Michael Jackson. 8. Sam Cooke. 9. Klaus Meine. 10. Stevie Wonder)
and I also think it's a little strange that Prince is only present in half of the lists of favourites on his own fan site. eek

I believe that Prince - a good singer. On all the main vocal characteristics: range, vocal technique, vocal control, intonation, power ......
he is a little above average or a good singer, but obviously not great.

But come on, singing has never been his main advantage or strengths. He's a great musician - instrumentalist and in this sense can easily beat 90% of people from each list here.

[Edited 12/30/11 10:16am]

You basically said the same thing I said. I know this is a favorites list. I love Prince but there much better singers.

Harlepolis

From my end, the reason why I included Prince was because of his ability to sing the same way he manipulated his guitar playing to fit a style. Like the Jazz vocalists of the past, you could tell he regards his own voice as one of the instruments, as opposed to viechle for singing.

Doesn't possesse a large vocal range, but the sheer versitality compensated for it. This is the reason why I have him in my list, and this is also the common factor that linked the rest of the singers I mentioned, save for Lady Day.

Prince have great vocal range.

He can go from the very deep bass notes to very high falsetto notes.

And nobody can sing Prince's song the way he can.

People hail Adel but i heard so many singers killing it on Rolling in the Deep

but i never heard anyone do justice to the beautiful Ones or Purple Rain.

Mariah did Beautiful Ones,Beyonce also and they are praised as being a great singers, yet Prince sings those songs much better.

It's not about this being a fan site but Prince really is great singer and he proved that so many times.

I think his vocals were the best on 1999 tour

How can you doubt Prince's vocal range when you give so much credit to...Freddie? There are so many songs but off the top of my head, songs like "Solo", "God", "Most beautiful girl in the world" really show his beautiful falsetto. And I was blown away when I watched his "Do me baby", "Adore" live from Lovesexy tour. He has stable control in his voice when he sings live. I'm not so sure about his recent performances but during his prime, I think he truly had one of the best/greatest voices. And yes he has powerful voice as well, ugh, this one is going to be a really long list lol I think he's excellent at singing quietly and still being able to put so much emotions in the song. He has very colorful voice, in a way that he makes one same song sound completely different at concerts. He can certainly produce, arrange, play many different instruments...but these things don't have anything to do with his singing. I don't see why we shouldn't count his singing as his main skills.

He has this particular singing style he seems to prefer -I think a lot of his well-known songs are very easy-to-sing-along pop/funk/RnB songs that don't really have any vocal range, and sometimes, some of them can sound...karaoke lol But that doesn't mean he's not capable of hitting high notes or sing powerfully. You just have to find the right songs where he truly shows what he can really do with his voice.
