ANITA BAKER EXPLAINS WHY SHE BACKED OUT OF VH1 DIVAS LIVE http://rollingout.com/mus...how-feuds/
Last week, soul stars collided when VH1 brought together singers like Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson and Ledisi to honor soul legends from across the nation and across the pond, like Chaka Khan, Mavis Staples and Amy Winehouse at “VH1 Divas Celebrate Soul.” But rumors emerged of an alleged behind-the-scenes feud between singers Jill Scott and Anita Baker, who skipped out on her performance during the show.
Both singers have remained mum on the situation until now, with Baker recently sharing her explanation of what happened on the night of the show via her Twitter page. Through a series of lengthy tweets, Baker explained that she decided not to perform at the “Divas” show due to a disagreement with show producers over her performance of her iconic hit “Sweet Love.” Baker explains that she and the producers couldn’t come to an agreement on which parts she should sing of the song, who should sing with her, and how she should sing her own song, leading to an argument that left Baker in tears and prompted her to abandon the show. Here’s a list of the tweets below.
“It’s called an Exit clause If t Brand/artist is not being presented properly/per agreement/contract? Brand/artist can sidestep all nonsense” “
You can’t just “Walk Off a Show” at t last min.. this was BUSINESS Great musicians & artists worked out t tribute, i cried all t way home.”
“i begged 4 rehersals Sweet Love is not a duet. Duh.. u sing 2 lines, they sing 2 lines. NO..it deserves an arrangement & rehersal…”
“I sent emails asking 4 vocal rehearsals… pls. i was told “You should Chill, it’s not about the song, anyway..it’s about who’s singing it.”
“3 mins B4 dress rehearsal, i had no duet partner, simply b/c i asked if i could sing the first verse 2 establish the energy of the song…”
“it went South from there… folks started fallin’ out the Drama O’ Rama began… i went to my dressing Rm. The rumors erupted. i cried”
“I tried 2 squash t whole thing Put on a good face. cried 2 myself so not 2 cast shade on any1, John’s words (their mngr) hit me 2 hard Sorry”
“I just needed 2 get it out. I was also told that we shouldn’t do “all that hollerin” that i do on the end of “Sweet Love”???? the end”
Though Baker never directly addresses the rumors that she Jill Scott were involved in any backstage drama, she does hint that something may have occurred, claiming that she has taken “the high road” and will never “say a negative thing about any artist.” “I took the high road… as i will ALWAYS do. I have never. Nor, will i ever say a negative thing about any artist,” tweeted Baker. “The gossip ur looking for, love? The “StreetNESS” you crave?…Will never come from me I’m the oldest. I’ll take the hit. Ab.”
And despite her departure from the “Divas,” Baker reveals that she did enjoy the show as well as Ledisi and Marsha Ambrosius’ performance of “Sweet Love.” “The show was great. A lot of ppl worked very hard to bring it 2U. My light was shining even tho i wasn’t there… made some ppl mad ab,” tweeted Baker. “@MUTHAKNOWS Oh Marsha and Ledisi saved the song for me. Grateful 2 them ab.” It’s unfortunate that Baker wasn’t able to perform at “Divas” and that an apparent beef exploded backstage. Perhaps, Jill Scott or whichever artist it was will speak up about the incident. So 25 years later, can we stop this sham of referring to her as "singer Anita Baker" and just go with "cunt Anita Baker?"
I mean, really. She ain't singin' shit these days. But there's plenty of stories about her being a major pain in the ass with a bad attitude all over the place.

Anita has always sufferred from what I call Diana Ross Complex. Except for Diana is a legend and an Icon. Anita is only a legend and Icon in her own mind. Anita expects everyone to bow down to her and if they refuse, she can't be bothered. I've seen the old gal in action. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Me, too! Damn the bs. The only person I want to hear oversinging "Sweet Love" is Anita Baker herself. So I ain't mad at her. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

she tweeted about the album not too long ago saying that she's been slow with the album because she wanted to see how the sale of EMI would go. my guess is that it won't be too long of a wait now that EMI has been sold but it's Anita so there's no telling how long we'll have to wait.

Hell no. Anita is in the right on this one. It's her freaking song and she is THE only one qualify to know how her song works. If the song was never arranged as a duet, then Jill Scott was not needed and the producers had no damn right to disregard any of Anita's valid points.
It's no different from Prince telling Mariah that The Beautiful Ones is never intended as a duet and Dru Hill was not needed. Al least that is exactly how I look at it.

"Ain't Nobody" was not meant as a duet but Chaka & Mary J. did it anyway. "I'll Take You There" was not written or intended as a duet but not only was it performed by Mavis & Chaka on the show (Erykah really didn't do anything), Be Be & Ce Ce Winans turned it into a duet and took it to the top of the charts back in 1991!
Just about any song can be performed as a duet. Anita just wanted the spotlight all to herself. She was probably mad because they let Martha Reeves yelp her way thru "No Where To Run" by herself so Baker figured she should have at least had her own solo. And she was pissed when they told her "NO!". "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

I'm glad that she didn't perform. Yeah Chaka, Mavis and Badu sung "I'll Take You there" and they were horrible! I tried to look at the show twice and I just could not take it. They few performances that I saw was booorrrrring

Like I stated a while ago, most of the show appeared to be totally unrehearsed and thrown together. It was more like a let's see how many different people we can fit into one show type of thing. It was just all really an unprofessional mess. I thought that bootleg tribute to Amy Winehouse was one of the most disrespectful things I've ever seen. I thought Chaka should have backed out too but she is known for taking the stage totally unrehearsed so it was business as usual for her. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! And what does this have to do with THIS thread about Anita Baker?
You know what Errant, f*** off! I don't even give a damn what you think of me anymore! I doing my best to stick to the topic of this thread, even trying my best to stick to discussion about music in general without ever saying a f***ing thing about conspiracies in general OR a goddamn "Illuminati" and instead of you being happy that you finally got what you wanted for once, you want to start some bullshit with me by laying down this obvious flamebait.
And I also sick and tried of watching most of my favorite orgers that once make prince.org interesting leaving one by one and selling-out to Facebook full-time because prince.org has stop being fun and educating.
Well you and every other sorry sons AND daughters of bitches that dislike/hate me so damn much do not have to worry about me saying anything anymore because Anthony is leaving prince.org.
That's right I said it!!!! Anthony AKA TonyVanDam/TVD is leaving the org. And I don't know if I ever want to come back here anymore after December 2011 because it pretty obvious that I can't even be myself without some idiot, troll, OR disinfo agent trying to demonize me because he/she don't like what I have to say in a thread.

Hi, Regcart!! | |

Anita's tweet about her requests for vocal rehearsals being denied seems to confirm the slapped-together nature of the show. So I could understand to an extent why she wouldn't particpate. I have several questions though: Did she know before signing on that she would have to perform the song with a duet partner or was that brought up later on? Do older artists have the option of performing alone or have a choice as to who they're paired up with, or is it totally VH-1's choice?

Some artists have gone on YouTube to explain that they don't know what they're really getting into and are told later what they would be doing. So that's a good possibility.

Well Anita has been known to be rude, arrogant, disrespectful and a downright b-word. She had two falling outs with Babyface, one major one with Luther Vandross, cuss outs with sound companies when she tours. She is more difficult than the other "A' from Detroit, LOL Music Royalty in Motion
