In the weeks leading up to the annual inundation of Wham's holiday ode 'Last Christmas,' the band's former singer George Michael has been hospitalized with pneumonia. His publicist revealed that the singer is undergoing treatment in a Vienna hospital.

On Monday, Nov. 21, the 48-year-old Michael called off a concert in the Austrian capitol just two hours before he was set to go on stage and canceled his Nov. 23 show in Strasborg, France.

"With great regret, George Michael has been forced to postpone his November 26 and 27 shows in Cardiff, Wales, due to his ongoing illness," a statement on his site reads.

"George was recently forced to postponed tour dates in Vienna and Strasbourg under doctor's orders after being diagnosed with pneumonia. He is currently receiving treatment. Plans to reschedule these postponed tour dates will be provided when available."

Michael is in the midst of his orchestral "Symphonica Tour," which could continue into 2012 due to high ticket demand. Michael's next scheduled show is on Nov. 30 in Liverpool.

I think anything related to pneumonia is really because of issues with the heart so pneumonia might've added to his trouble. I felt something was wrong when he canceled one of his London shows at the Royal Albert Hall I believe. I think he'll be alright.

'George has woken up and he's in good spirits': Singer Michael makes progress after being struck down with pneumonia

By Ben Todd, Sara Nathan and Tom Kelly

Last updated at 1:50 AM on 25th November 2011

George Michael 'woke up' in hospital in Austria today - raising hopes for his recovery from pneumonia.

The star is being treated in the city’s AKH hospital after he was taken there from a private home in the city after his condition deteriorated.

The Daily Mail has learned the 48-year-old star 'woke up' at lunchtime.

One relieved close friend told the Mail: 'George has woken up and he’s in good spirits.

'Doctors are very pleased with him - and he’s making progress.

'He’s been in terrible pain. He’s had a dreadful chest infection - but he’s been in good care. He’s in very capable hands.'

Showing the deep level of concern for the star amongst his close-knit circle, the friend went on: 'This is a very serious condition. It cannot be understated. George needs rest.

'It takes ages to recover. It is serious - but he is in good hands.'

Michael is being treated on the thirteenth floor of the AKH hospital, in a suite normally used by Austrian politicians and other VIPs when they are seriously ill.

Doctors yesterday brought in a special bed for the star which is used to help breathing for patients who have suffered bad cases of pneumonia.

Another friend said today: 'George is improving. He’s happy - and smiling.'

The star, who first rose to fame as the lead singer of Eighties pop group Wham!, last played a concert at the Festhalle in Frankfurt, Germany last Saturday as part of his Symphonica tour.

Michael is believed to be dating Australian-born celebrity hair stylist Fadi Fawaz and the couple were seen together on a balcony in Venice, Italy earlier this month.

Michael had been due to perform at Austrian capital Vienna on Monday.

However, the concert was called off just two hours before it was due to start. At the time, it was initially claimed the star had a throat infection.

Since then he has been forced to cancel a number of forthcoming dates on his Symphonica tour, including last night’s show in Strasbourg, France as well as planned concerts in Cardiff this weekend.

A statement said: 'Singer George Michael has been forced to postpone the Cardiff dates (26th and Sunday 27th of November) of his Symphonica tour due to illness.

'The singer recently postponed tour dates in Vienna and Strasbourg under doctor’s orders after being diagnosed with pneumonia and he is currently receiving treatment.'

The statement added that plans to reschedule the dates would be provided when available.

Another statement on his website said the singer was cancelling the Cardiff concerts with 'great regret' due to his 'ongoing illness.'

Aides for the singer were forced to deny Austrian media claims that he was also suffering from a suspected chest infection as well as heart problems.

Michael has also been conspicuously absent from his Twitter page.

The star, who has become voracious in his use of Tweets in recent months, has not tweeted since November 17.

His private jet has also remained stationed at the main airport in the city.

His next concert, which began in August in Prague, is now due to take place at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on November 30.

Austrian Concert promoter Manfred Leodolter said yesterday: 'George Michael is still in Vienna.

'He has cancelled his next few shows including tonight’s (Wednesday) show in Strassboug, France. Doctors have warned him for the moment against flying and he is getting rest in Vienna.'

The latest cancellations come after Michael had to call off one of his concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in central London suffering from a viral infection.

That concert has now been rescheduled for next May.

Critics have hailed Michael’s concerts as a huge success with the Daily Mail’s Adrian Thrills writing: 'A stunning finale from a performer who suddenly looks back to his best'

Michael announced the 65-show tour of Europe in May - three years after he said he would quit live performance.

At the time, the singer, who spent a month in prison for drug-driving last year, told a press conference at the Royal Opera House in London: 'I felt very re-energised after my recent troubles.

'I felt it was really what I want to do as an artist.'

He had to cancel the rest of his tour dates this year due to the seriousness of this illness. Doctors in Austria are not sure when he'll recover (like in weeks or months). I hear he may stay in the hospital until Christmas.

Apparently, if the rumor is true, George's condition is more serious than originally thought:

'Critically-ill' George Michael being cared for on life-saving special bed

28/11/2011 - 09:19:32
George Michael is being kept on a special hospital bed which has "probably saved his life" in his battle against pneumonia.

The 'Careless Whisper' singer is being cared for on the £100,000 bed designed for critically-ill lung patients, in the intensive care room of the AKH Hospital in Vienna, Austria.

Dr Carol Cooper told The Sun newspaper: "The bed has probably saved his life so far, but he is far from out of the woods yet."

Fans and family are worried as it was claimed last night the star has developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome - a lung condition often caused by pneumonia, which stops oxygen getting into the blood, and is potentially-fatal.

George is strapped into the Triadyne Proventa 'kinetic therapy' bed, designed for people in acute respiratory distress who cannot move, and it constantly tilts from side to side up to 40 degrees, to relieve pressure on his lungs.

Dr Cooper added: "These beds are lifesavers and exceptionally expensive, even to use.

"With the lungs not functioning well, the heart has to pump harder to shift the blood around the body, which would make it harder to survive. This bed tries to get the lungs functioning as best they can.

"The movement helps shift secretions inside the lung to make sure they don't collect and make you worse. But if he is still being cared for like this, he is very seriously ill.

"He is in a critical condition, which means he could die. We still don't know why pneumonia affects some people more than others. But if you are middle-aged, and maybe with other problems such as with your immune system, your outlook is not so good."

Survivors of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome may suffer memory loss or other mental issues during their recovery because of the lack of oxygen to the brain. It can also be accompanied other organ failure, such as the kidney or liver.

George Michael is thought to be under the surveillance of a kidney specialist and on a special breathing machine.

His rumoured boyfriend, Fadi Fawaz, 38, said yesterday: "George is doing well and is in good spirits — getting stronger all the time."

The singer was rushed to hospital last week and on Friday cancelled the rest of his current 'Symphonica Tour'.

neutral I don't know if I believe it especially since other reports stated he was stabilized. I hate when shit like this happens...
