Nobody said that. They said she shouldn't cover Purple Rain. That's not to say she can't cover any other song.

PR is a song in P's repertoire that really shouldn't be touched because everyone makes the mistake of oversimplifying or oversinging. It's all about the nuance, which a lot of artists seem to miss.

Goin' to Fantasia's cover, I think she did a good job. I was impressed.

I have to admit though almost anyone who does a Prince cover don't always get it right. I didn't think Kevin's version of "The Beautiful Ones" was as masterful as Prince's by a long shot. In the case of Fantasia, she's a good singer and she can perform as well as some older performers (Patti for instance) but I would think if someone was gonna cover Prince, they would have a problem to match what Prince brought to the table. That said, I did like Fantasia's live cover of it.

Let me ask you a question: if Fantasia covered "Purple Rain," would she in fact be

covering Prince? Yes. So your first statement's insistence upon semantics is silly.

Your second statement is silly as well; there are plenty of gifted recording artists who

have the means to interpret/cover any song they choose, let alone a Prince song, and

do it well. What you're really saying here is that you don't want anyone covering

"Purple Rain" because it is so identifiable to its author, in your opinion.

I understand that sentiment, however: I didn't want anyone covering one of my favorite

Prince songs, "She's Always In My Hair" until I heard D'Angelo's version.

My point about Kevin Michael was that he came in here, personally trying to get us

to listen to his boring and bland interpretation, and got his ass kissed because he was

here personally and a celebrity. But with Fantasia, who is a much more interesting

singer, there are people in this thread saying that she shouldn't cover "Purple Rain"/Prince.

But if she was in this thread herself, asking us, I bet 99% of y'all would tell her "Yes!
