More Lefsetz - 10,000 Hours I'm sick and fucking tired of people telling me they've put in their 10,000 hours, so they should be rich and famous. "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

That is one shitty article. You can work your arse off and still not make it. The main factor is luck. He is nothing but an ill-informed loud-mouthed armchair pundit who has probably never done anything in music.

A musician and a doctor are two different things. Being "good" or "bad" at music doesn't make a difference in whether someone lives or dies. There's no "music malpractice". Music is just entertainment.
If writing songs is what it takes to be successful, how does that explain orchestras and opera singers, who mainly perform music written by guys who have been dead for centuries. The majority of music acts that have existed since the record business began don't self write. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Bob Lefsetz comes off as a curmudgeon, no doubt. "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I think there's a lot of truth here, but as you say, it's delivered like that old man on the porch yelling at the neighborhood kids and their naive dreams. I don't know. The more I fiddle with my antenna, the more I feel it's mostly and simply about how acutely one can deliver their soul. And there's no formula for creating or discerning in that. Either your soul is in a position to create or catch in that moment, or it's not. And that's partially about holding the truth well above ego. About holding music above musicianship. About realizing that something far bigger than self can be created, but that never makes the hard-working conduit a god amongst men.

Actually, he's far more informed than you, a loud mouthed prince.org member who hasn't done anything in music and more than likely never will.
Thanks for responding though!
