Not saying he wasn't popular but I only see people stan for him on this site lol Maybe I need to re-discovered him because I never got the vibe people were waiting on him to return even when he left. I guess it's like another Lauryn Hill situation lol

What was the reason?

I'm on okayplayer.com everyday after work and Questlove often shared little tid bits of information every now and again... one of the things that he shared regarded the reception of the band and their music during that Voodoo tour. Quest said that they had rehearsed forever and were really keen on ensuring that the arrangements of the music were as strong as they could make them - D'angelo wasn't too thrilled about his audience really eager to see him take his shirt off like he did in the Untitled video. Essentially, he was disappointed by his fans not really listening to what they were doing musically.

Quest also shared that D'angelo had major stage fright. He said that they'd watch video boots of Prince and Sly to get themselves amped for the performance but D would struggle.

J

Exactly! he felt his audience didn't take him serious as an artist. He regreted doing the "Untitled" video of him getting head. He felt a lot of preasure keeping up the sex symbol image. Angie Stone his baby mama(Who was tossed aside because people felt she didn't fit his image) said he always had self esteem issues even b 4 he became "D'angelo". She had to tell him all the time he had sexy lips & build his ego. By the way Angie was the ghost writer for his first album. She deserves way more credit for his success.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

I know lol The most hype he ever got was for that Untitled video. I knew who he was before but he honestly was no different from usher or ginuwine to most when he did that.

I remembered when he dropped Brown Sugar and while he was quite popular (I bought the tape after hearing "Lady", that's what had me buying it), he didn't made as big a splash UNTIL "Untitled", then he dropped off.

Getting head in the "Untitled" video? Mind you, that would explain the splash that Timmy84 was on about.

Next month I might go get his albums but yeah he pretty much just vanish after that. I remember MTV pretty much hyping him up when that video drop so I really didn’t see any difference from him from the other male R&B singers taking their shirts off at that time. lol That video was a gift and a curse.

Yeah. Brown Sugar and Voodoo were night and day but I'd prefer BS over Voodoo...

Yes, I heard the same. Quest gave me tix to the Seattle Voodoo show. When I saw Shelby, Anthony Hamilton, and Bilal Oliver on backup and a REALLY incredible band, I was floored at the arrangements. Yes, the women (and possibly some men) went crazy when he took his shirt off and started humping the stage, but honestly, though... musically it was a GREAT show. His odes to Prince, Sly and Marvin during the arrangements were great to listen to live. Bilal and Anthony's little ad lib spots were great, and if I remember correctly Shelby J may have had a little ad-lib section. I distinctly remember Bilal though, because I was then told by ?uest that his album was in the works.

Really dope show.

Do you know Quest personally?

J

No... not really. He and I used to chat regularly online back in the day and we lost touch once I married and changed all my online handles. The last thing I remember him letting me know was about Erykah's "Mama's Gun" album dropping. So it was a WHILE ago. Those tix to D's show were epic. Wifey didn't believe me all the way through the trip downtown until we got to will call. LOL.

i booked half of the dates on this tour and it was amazing. got a chance to kick it with questlove and dangelo and alan leeds a plus! got a few shows on vhs that could blow a few mugs mind too.

What do you mean you booked half of the dates?

What was it like hanging out with Alan Leeds? Any cool Prince stories?

Jay

I CONVINCED A PROMOTER TO DO A FEW DATES WITH DANGELO ON THIS TOUR AND IT WAS INTENSE. HANGING OUT WITH MR LEEDS WAS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE, DUE TO THE FACT THAT HE WORKED WITH PFUNK AND JAMES BROWN. THE BEST PRINCE STORY ON THIS TOUR WAS THE INFAMOUS JAM SESSION THAT TOOK PLACE AT PAISLEY PARK WITH PRINCE,AHMIR, AND D'ANGELO. THAT NIGHT WAS SURREAL.

It was the untitled video that made me question my sexual orientation. I was like "why the hell can't I look away?" lol

Well I was at that Brixton gig in 2000 and I still remember it as being one of the greatest gigs I've ever seen.

D'angelo does owe a huge debt to Prince, both musically and as inspiration for his performance on that tour after all Untitled (How Does It Feel?) was a massive homage to classic era Prince and I remember reading there is something of a mutual appreciation society between the two.

There is also internet "talk" about Prince being in some way involved with the new album James River. We shall see.

For those who do like D'angelo come check my blog where I have written in depth about the subject

Since D'angelo appears ready for a comeback, I've made a blog post to reminisce on the Voodoo tour and the Soultronics band. My blog post sums up some of the recent news and also includes some youtube videos from the 7/16/00 North Sea Jazz Fest show in which I took the FM audio and synced it to the (suprisingly good quality) audience video.

Please check it out and feel free to spread this link far and wide, share it on facebook, twitter, etc.:

I love the horn-heavy funk jam after Lady. Is that from an already existing song or their original arrangement?
