Donna Summer rerecords a new version of "Love To Love You Baby" for a fragrance commercial

Moving on to music news, Donna has rerecorded a new version of Love To Love You for the new fragrance "Loverdose" by Diesel. Now, you can hear it on YouTube if you'd like, OR... and I think you will like this more... Facebook users can go to the Loverdose Facebook page where clicking "like" will give you a download link. Pretty sweet! (And this is how I end up "liking" stuff that doesn't normally interest me - just throw some Donna Summer at me and I click anything! LOL)

A tape of the song was sent to Casablanca Records president Neil Bogart in the U.S. and he played it at a party at his home. He was so impressed with the track that he continued to play it over and over all night. He later contacted Moroder and suggested that he make the track longer - possibly as long as twenty minutes. Summer had reservations once again, however; she wasn't even sure of all the lyrics, but she imagined herself as an actress (namely Marilyn Monroe)playing the part of someone in sexual ecstasy. The studio lights were dimmed so that Summer was more or less in complete darkness as she lay on the floor. The final recording lasted over sixteen minutes, and contained the sexiest "simulated" orgasms ever found on vinyl. According to the BBC, the song contained 23 "orgasms". It was also at this point that the song was renamed "Love To Love You Baby." It took up the entire first side of the album of the same name, and was also released as a 12" single. Edited versions were also found on 7" vinyl, and the song became an international disco smash. Released in November 1975, it became Summer's first U.S. top 40 hit, spending two weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1976 and logged four weeks atop the Billboard U.S. disco chart, as well number three on the soul singles chart. Also, the song was a success on the UK Singles Chart upon release there in January 1976; it reached #4 despite the BBC's refusal to promote it. Summer would be named "the first lady of love," which labeled her with a sexually-oriented, fantasy image from which she would struggle to free herself.

yEAH I know

she had a TV profile back in the 1990's where she said she wasn't going to sing it again

But I think she was talking about that from prior years

I don't understand but I do, why the orgasmic convers on that album was 'bad' for her to stop it

right, what about Loving 2 Lover her man is against the bible, sounds like a song right out of the Song of Solomon

and she continued to sings I Feel Love, which was (by the way she performed it) very sexual in nature

Maybe it's the way Love 2 Love.. was recorded

Yeah the fake moans and shit. From footage I saw, it looked like she wasn't struggling with doing pelvic thrusts to it. lol She finally saw the light though! Because that song still sounds heavenly when listening to the longer version... I don't know if she felt pressured or what but I doubt she was. It wasn't like her situation with Quincy...

Plus this song gave her the inadvertent title of "The Goddess of Love" or "First Lady of Love" and she hated it so I guess she was trying to become her own artist and break away from the song which had her label cultivate her image.

I don't know man, from the way they had her record it it could be real

they dimmed the lights for her and she recorded it laying on the floor... I don't know, maybe that's why she pulled from it later, cause she was orgasmically singing

An actress she is. At least, in a song. From her book, Ordinary Girl, here's a little info on Love To Love You Baby's birth:

"...One of the most important aspects of my singing that Giorgio encouraged me to expand was my approach to a song. To this day, I will approach a song as an actress approaches a script. I do not sing. I act..."

"...Early in 1975, I had been playing around with a song idea. I didn't have anything more than just the title. In fact, the line was originally written as, 'I'd love to love you', which I thought was so cool. When I gave it to Giorgio, he paused for a second and then said excitedly, 'Donna! I like this!'......"

"...Sometimes it takes a while for me to discover who the character in a song is and sometimes, I nail it right away. With Love To Love You Baby, I came up with an image of Marilyn Monroe singing the song in that light and fluffy but highly sensual voice of hers...."

"...Neil (Bogart) asked Giorgio to expand the three minute track to seventeen minutes to fill an entire side. The perfect amount of time to 'get the job done'..."

"...That's when we dimmed the lights, lit a few candles, and I added all those oohs and aahs. You see, I never intended to give Giorgio the song that way. I'd only intended to give Giorgio my idea for the song. When it came time to expand it to seventeen minutes, Giorgio left all those oohs and aahs in because the song didn't have anymore words..."

Oh I have that book too.

I have to re-read it...

There are a lot of intresting stories about how songs were created.

There are YouTube clips of her singing the song as recently as 2010, but the one big difference is that she excludes the orgasmic moans and heavy breathing.

I was in middle school when Love To Love You Baby first came out. I didn't know exactly what was going on then, but I knew there was something going on besides getting a good night's sleep. When Hot Stuff was out, I was in high school and knew for sure she wasn't singing about craving hot wings from KFC.
