Music Reads
Have you read any good books, magazines or articles lately?
Anyone subscribe to music magazines? I've been following Wax Poetic for a few years now (and some professional audio ones). Looking for more like it, though. Here's an article they did on David Axelrod that I found really interesting:

It wasn't lately, but I thought this was a good book and a labour of love,,, [img:$uid]http://www.amoeba.com/dynamic-images/blog/9780312134990.jpg[/img:$uid]

Waxpoetics offers subscription, right? I need one "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Whats the verdict?
I plan on reading J. Randy Taraborrelli's book but I'm kinda skeptical for some reason. I've read his Elizabeth Taylor and Diana Ross books and while they were enjoyable, something hiss "bullshit" from some of those pages.

These are the books I've read most recently:
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I couldn't study the Diana book. I think J. Randy had an agenda against Diana...

It's really good. Found stuff I had never knew before. Although for me, some of the info I knew already, it offered a lot of new tidbits (for example, the slight riff between the team who worked with Michael at Hayvenhurst and the team at Westlake during Bad). Overall I give it a 4 out of 5
Yeah don't read J Randy's book. It's got a bunch of BS that he most likely just came up with on his own "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

How's the "King Of Queen City" book? That Prince book looks cool too "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

He's a Diana stan "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Actually, it was quite the opposite, he revered Miss Ross - a lil' too much at that - I was looking for an objective account on her life. My issue was how he handled her discography, it was sloppy and rushed, it was basically treated as something he needed to get out of the way.

I meant the '89 book, lol yeah he treated her better on the reissue, I forget what year (2006 probably). But yeah her discography was fucked up.

One of the best music mags with the worst subscription policy. "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

that sucks. I want a subscription (I usually find it at record stores and Barnes And Noble) but in that case.... "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

The two parts anthologies are great reads as well.

Pretty good. It tells about how Sydney Nathan was a tyrant and cheap, and that some of his acts had conflicts with him. It also mentions that many of their country/hillbilly and R&B/race records had the same musicians on them. King was the first label that Granpa Jones (who was later most known for being on Hee Haw) recorded for. The Prince & George Harrison books are both in a series of books by Praeger. They're mostly about the songs, not biographies. They're kind of written in a scholarly way, but not really hard to read. Prince's book goes up to Planet Earth. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

This book is interesting, but not one that I could read from front to back. Best to treat it as a friend and flip around to get a new anecdote from time to time. I wish he had focused more on music and less on his various addictions, but what do you expect? It is sure to interest me for years to come
This one was a quick read. It makes a difference when a real writer writes the book! Tom Waits is a very private person, and I realized while reading this that I knew nothing about him. Was surprised to find as people talked about his wife's control over his career that people actually praise her for it rather than compare her to Yoko.
The writer is also very into Prince and compares the two artists. Also says Tom is a Prince fan (no word on whether or not he likes the piano sampler set)

What piano sampler set?

The little song snippets Prince has been playing at the piano at his concerts (just a joke--I was torn between "sampler set," "lotusflow3r," and "20Ten" I'm sure Tom Waits knows nothing of any of those things) [Edited 12/19/11 15:38pm] My Legacy

This is good although there's a few minor typos like Chester Thompson's birthdate. It's all by the band members themselves, similar to The Beatles Anthology book. Anybody that had anything to do with Genesis is featured. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. This 2010 book is about every known song that the 4 Beatles participated in with other acts, whether writing or performing, as a group and solo.
