I never liked her dancing. She looked so stiff. Andy is a four letter word.

This one is Angela Bofill & Con Funk Shun. The ST line is dancing to a song I've never heard before called P.Y.T. I have the album that the songs Angela are performing come from. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

This episode has 4 acts. This looks like a mid 90's show, so I'm not really familiar with any of them. I remember a couple of songs by For Real though. The others are Case, Southside Boys, & Mint Condition. Darius from Family Matters is the host. I wonder why Don C. appears at the front of the show, but then has guest hosts for the rest of it. Bounce TV will honor Don Cornelius with a seven-hour "Soul Train" marathon this Saturday starting at 7P ET / 4P PT.
Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

I've been watching on Centric since last night. Quite a jump from 1977 to 1987. The clothes, the dances, the music. The 'Bump.' From Johnny Guitar Watson to Chico DeBarge to the Dramatics. I love watching and remembering where I was in my life by looking at the fashions on Soul Train and listening to the music.
Now The Time is on. Get It Up! Jesse with an afro. Morris with an attitude...I love this. But this comedian sucks.
RIP Don... And thank you!
(yep...1981)

I'd like to think the Abilfy ad that ran in the first commercial break was just a coincidence, and not some drug company's cynical attempt to cash in on Don's tragic demise. Hey...

She just said that Gino Vanelli was the 1st white act on the show. I'm pretty sure that the Average White Band, Elton John, and others were before him. Bounce or whoever gave her this information needs to do more research. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. VH1's 2010 Soul Train documentary mentioned that as well. Gino and Don were both interviewed in the program and confirmed it. Gino recalled discussing with Don his invitation to perform on the show, saying "I'm not black". Don's response was "you're off-white", However some people claim Dennis Coffey was actually the 1st white artist to perform on Soul Train, before Gino. Hey...

What? They were 18 years deep (and 14 years professional) when they were on the show. [Edited 2/4/12 19:12pm]

Reading Wikipedia's page of the list of the ST episodes in the first ten years and yeah, Dennis Coffey was on that show in January 1972, a year before Gino so technically he definitely was the first white artist on Soul Train. Gino was probably the first white SINGER since Dennis was an instrumentalist.

Interesting. Too bad that was never mentioned in Soul Train's official doc or other bios. Dennis Coffey's "Scorpio" is a funky track, too. Hey...

That is what Gladys said on the show from a question one of the dancers asked the group.
