recent P-Funk releases

Just looking through my P-Funk CD collection and thinking about the new & recent stuff I got this year...

The only brand new album I got this year: Bootsy Collins - The Funk Capital Of The World

Decent album, not great, but some cool stuff on there. I dig some of the monologues over the jams like Al Sharpton on JB-Still The Man, Cornell West on Freedumb & Sam Jackson on After These Messages. For Purple fans, Sheila E. shows up on The Real Deal. The Jazz Greats & Garry Shider Tribute are pretty sweet. And there's a brand new Munchies track updating the classic.

Not a classic album, but for sure funky and fun! Worth checking out.

Some of the rarer side albums from the 70's have finally seen a release on CD in the states. There's a couple albums by The Brides that I haven't picked up yet. I did jump at the opportunity to finally upgrade my vinyl rip of Bernie Worrell - All The Woo In The World. The new CD release comes in a digi-pack and doesn't include any extras not available on the original LP. I have no idea if it's remastered or not as I have never heard the Japanese CD release and comparing to my vinyl rip will not reveal the answer. It does sound great though and I highly recommend this to all Bernie & P-Funk fans! In my opinion All The Woo is one of the under rated classic forgotten P-Funk albums. Check this one out for sure!!

Lastly, not exactly a new release, I just slept on picking it up till this year. Blackbyrd McKnight - 'Bout Funkin' Time

Released independently in 2009, Blackbyrd finally has his own solo CD!! Every fan of his funk-metal axework needs to get this right now. This CD is a JAM! I have trouble suggesting a highlight because, to me, the entire CD is the highlight. I guess I particularly love Funkarockaholic & The Mad Hit. But, as I said before, I'm loving it all, so... go get this!!

I've been meaning to buy the download only, Makin' Babies compilation, but haven't got around to it yet.

I finally bought the 420 Funk Mob albums from iTunes as I've given up on finding them on CD, at least at finding them at an affordable price. I cannot say enough about 420 Funk Mob. That's some killer live P-Funk right there. Check em out on iTunes.

How was P-Funk for you in 2011? Get anything new? Get anything old, that was new to you?

P-Funk? I am afraid there was not much going on in 2011. The one and only album that comes directly to my mind is JaGoFF / It Takes A Major Label To Hold Us Back but I am not even sure if this is real P-Funk or just Funk?!

A couple of good tracks are on DELTA NOVE's - Imaginary Conversations, feat. George Clinton on one song ... and if you dont mind the French language, what about Mac Mulinsh / Pip Hop The Volume, it's from 2006 but it has been relased only this year.

^ JaGoFF was just funk to me. It did have SOME P-Funk influence but nah...

I didn't wanna touch Bootsy mainly due to it having too many guests in it. That's what stops me from listening or buying albums that I might otherwise want.

I'm sure if Garry hadn't died we would've gotten more P-Funk styled records from him too.

Your instincts are correct, much of Bootsy's album is jams overlayed with input from guests. Not a great album, but several solid tracks to enjoy. You might like the update of "Munchies"...
