Coming of age in the 80s, the first John Lennon song that left any kind of impression on me was this one:

Nobody Told me

It's one of those songs I hated as kid, but love as an adult.

Yeah I remember thinking this was absolutely horrible, and now I love it.

As a kid, I knew who the Beatles were, and I knew who Paul McCartney was, but I only learned who Lennon was because of his murder.

Terrible way to be introduced to a person, but he is arguably the artist who has made the biggest impact on my life.

So I still remember Dec 8, 1980. I was only 8 at the time, but I remember that night.

Years later I heard this song and had a vague memory of it from AM radio. It came out in 74 or 75, and it must have been one of the first songs I heard on the radio.

Specifically the hook at 1:45 was like a jog to my memory.

Same here. My parents didn't own one Beatles record so I didn't know them at all outside of the covers on the Sgt. Pepper's soundtrack, but I distinctly remember hearing about his death the following morning from other kids on my way to school.

A few years later "Nobody Told Me" was all over radio and appearing on "America's Top Ten" and I thought, "why is this dead guy in the top 10? I want to see more Michael Jackson."

yeah the same way i was introduced too. Very sad to know him that way, though i knew and heard of the Beatles, i always say that its always hard to say they are my favorites because i didnt grow up with the Beatles they were done by the time i was born so the experience of them was through my older brothers playing the records and then when John was murdered the music was everywhere, i remember the night well, my brother and father were watching monday night football when howard cosell announced it. Lately have been listening to lennon alot more, but understanding him more, his son Julian just released a new amazing record in the UK called "everything changes" and the now 47 year old Julian is coming to terms with his father and who he was, always has respected the artist, but as a father it has taken him this long to "get" what JOhn was about since he deserted Julian and his mom, rarely saw Julian, in fact Julian wasnt in the will, and we all know his relations with yoko, though that has mended somewhat, its more because his love for his half brother Sean, that because that is his mother he doesnt want to hurt her because thats hurting sean in a way

John was an amazing artist. I remember him often and I will always remember where I was when I heard the sad news about his murder.

I'm one of those that experienced The Beatles from the very beginning.

Vivid memories of waiting for them to make their appearances on...

...The Ed Sullivan Show

I had just pulled up to a club (Blackie's in Santa Monica) to do a gig.
While I was taking my amp out of the car a guy burst out of the club crying "They shot John!".

Same here I was introduced to John Lennon from his murder as well. I was a kid when he died and I grew up basically grew up in a Motown/Philly Sound music household. I had no idea the impact of John's music had on people. I remember watching the news and seeing people crying and the candlelight vigils. My teacher the next mentioned his death in class and she literally broke down. The show 'Solid Gold' host Dionne Warwick performed 'Imagine' and she had tears in her eyes.

His last album Starting Over was the first time I was introduce to his music it received so much airplay.

Can't say i'm a huge fan, but of course I recognize how supremely talented and influential he was and continues to be to this day. I do like some of his music but i've always been more interested in him as a person. I like what he stood for. Either way, Lennon is such a legend. His impact has been huge. He will never be forgotten. RIP

That's a nice, but sad, story!

I was jamming last night with a few older guys. They were old enough to have been around during the 60's and we were playing in this man-cave that was decorated in all kinds of endearingly dorky music (mostly Beatles) memorabelia, such as framed posters, signed albums, mini collector guitars, etc.

He had a mini setup of all the Beatles instruments, and the drums were knocked slightly askew. I said "must be the ghost of John Lennon" and he laughed. I said "you know yesterday was the anniversary of his death" and he suddenly got totally serious and started scolding himself saying he could not believe he forgot.

I could see how it really had affected him even 30 years later.
