Big battle: Destiny vs Triumph

VS

I know that this topic was discussed here a million times, but:
a) it was before I came to the forum;
b) I learned of the existence of these albums, just a few months ago (ooo, I know).

Which album do you prefer and why?

my ratings

Destiny
1. "Blame It on the Boogie" * * * *
2. "Push Me Away" * * * 1/2
3. "Things I Do For You" * * * *
4. "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" * * * * *
5. "Destiny" * * * *
6. "Bless His Soul" * * *
7. "All Night Dancin '" * * * 1 / 2
8. "That's What You Get (For Being Polite)" * * * *

In general * * * *

Triumph
1. "Can You Feel It" * * * * *
2. "Lovely One" * * * *
3. "Your Ways" * * *
4. "Everybody" * * * *
5. "This Place Hotel" * * * * 1 / 2
6. "Time Waits for No One" * * * *
7. "Walk Right Now" * * * *
8. "Give It Up" * * * *

Albums about equal, but very little advantage I give to Triumph.

What do you think, guys?

'Destiny' is the Jacksons' best album.

I've never been that crazy about 'Triumph'.It's alright but the previous album is a masterpiece.

I gotta give it to Triumph, even though I LOVE Destiny... Triumph just felt "Triumphant"! LOL..

It was like the Jacksons saying after Off The Wall we can do what Quincy can do...& make it even crazier. Yes, I'm saying Triumph is better than Off The Wall....& it is the perfect intro for Thriller.

I never understood why Triumph didn't sell at least as half as much as Thriller. Especially since fans who jumped on MJs bandwagon with Thriller should've picked up on the album he did right before it... It's practically just as good! biggrin

Leaving Thriller, its sales-phenomenon. wink
It is surprising that Triumph sold only 3 million, it is 6 times less than Off the Wall.
The difference between the release of two albums only 1 year, MJ has been very popular, and his vocal covers 80% of the songs on the Triumph, he also co-author of most of the songs, albums about the same quality .... It's really a bit strange.

The Jacksons were a seperate entity from Michael which is why it sold far less, and I'm sure OTW era overlapped with Destiny and Triumph just slightly, as he referred to Triumph as the OTW tour to himself in Moonwalk. The same thing happened with the Victory album too in 84' though we have Prince to thank for that as well lol

I love Destiny better than Triumph start to finish. The latter grew on me, but as soon as it did, I realized it's brilliance and for some time, I liked it better than OTW and Thriller.

Triumph all the way. worship

Wondering Who is not bad...just doesnt grab my attention much.

Oh the reason is that the album is alot more funky and experimental. The melodies are very good and sounds like the real Mike and the gang we been waiting for. They sound liek a real GROUP on this album with a wonderful collection of tunes. Destiny is alright, but I found some of it kind of corny and too disco like for me.

I bought it for those alone sometime after the MSG concerts cause I'd already known them for years, but ended up loving the rest. That's what happened with Destiny too from liking Shake Your Body and Blame It On The Boogie for years and being really surprised at how excellent the rest was. MJ kept surprising me like that, cause I would already love him and buy something to update my collection and love him even more and keep it going. Whether with a short film or an album with his brothers or a positive documentary....

A lot of the sales for The Jacksons' albums came post Thriller, when people started buying anything with Mike on it (ie. Farewell My Summer Love). The Jacksons as a group didn't get the same crossover play that Mike solo did, or like The Jackson 5 did initially. They were considered a R&B group and got mostly R&B airplay. R&B wasn't that big a market for sales at the time (in the US). That's why some R&B & funk acts watered down their music for a crossover Top 40 audience, where the big money was.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Triumph was more consistent but there was a rawer edge with Destiny but this is one of the ultimate body movers:

I would have to pick the "Destiny" album didnt they write the majority of their songs on this album? Besides this album was more commercialy successful compared to their previous albums produced by Gamble and Huff from Philly International. The Jacksons were 'pop' again due to the 'Destiny' album it just paved the way for the 'Triumph' album.

Though I love their Gamble & Huff works, the Jacksons didn't really get in their element until Destiny. That was the game changer for not only the Jackson brothers but Michael's own career.

Probably Triumph, as Can You Feel It is imo the greatest thing the Jacksons as a group ever did. Always sends shivers down my spine, that one. cool It could even imo be Michael's greatest moment on record.

I do not think Triumph is better than Off The Wall, but it's close in my opinion. wink

I know that most people here love Off The Wall to death and consider it a top of world music, but I appreciate Thriller, Bad and Dangerous above. boxed
Off The Wall is obviously a good album, but very overrated on this forum, imo ...
Music - a very subjective thing. wink

But come on, threads is not about mj`s solo albums.
ONLY Triumph and Destiny

I'm not crazy about Off The Wall either. Dangerous is 100x's beeter in my opnion, but we're talking about MJ so Off The Wall is still an amzing album
