If that bothers you enough to ruin your listening experience, then you must be trapped in L7!

I don't know what the hell does that mean shrug

It's a Rick James reference Harle "Bustin Out Of L7"

Several Bar Kays songs "borrowed" from other songs of the same period....

"Dance,Party,Etc" is very similiar to Prince's "D.M.S.R"

"Dirty Dancer" borrows the synth riff from MJ's "Billie Jean"

As you pointed out,"Freaky Behavior" is "Super Freak's" cousin lol

"Freakshow On The Dancefloor" sounds like a faster version of Midnight Star's "No Parking On The Dancefloor".

"Bangin' The Walls" is reminscent of Prince's "Automatic".

but hey...at least they borrowed from the best lol

I also hear some "Erotic City" in "Banging The Walls".

The opening guitar in "Dance Your Body, Desara" is similar to the opening guitar breakdown in "When Doves Cry".

"Sex Driver" steals from Midnight Star's "Freak-A-Zoid".

The breakdwon chant in "Missiles On Target" is similar to the breakdown chant in Prince's "Let's Work".

Sex Driver was my favorite from Banging The Wall. I know the Barkays have their version of

EWF's Fantasy with Open Your Eyes and Sherman Guy does a damn good job with it in

his falsetto just as he does with Runnin In And Out of My Life. Missiles On Target reminds me

more of Vanity 6's Nasty Girl as far as the lyrics go. If you listen to the Barkays alternate

version of Your Place or Mine which is on the Funk Essentials Vol. 2 it sounds more like Erotic

City. The album version is more funkier imo. Shine mirrors EWF's On Your Face.

The Barkays were a group that absorbed everything in R&B at the time and weren't opposed

to embracing it but they were at their best on the stage during their heyday.

Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

L7 makes me think of that Flintstones' episode where Fred becomes a teen idol singer named "Hi Fi". Wilma wants him to become Fred again, so her and Betty spread the gossip that Hi Fi is "L7", meaning "square". Which was a no-no with teenagers of the 1960's. lol

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I hated that alternate version of "Your Place Or Mine". Too stripped down.

Yes, they are absolutely great on stage and they are my favorite act to see live. I've seen them many times because Memphis is our neighbors to the North so they are down here a lot but I did get the chance to see them for the first time in 1985 right after I graduated high school and they were wild as hell!

Billie Jean's rhythm was copied from Hall & Oates I Can't Go For That though. Daryl Hall said Michael himself mentioned it to him, and said he (MJ) hoped he (DH) didn't mind. Quincy Jones said that My Sharona was an influence on Beat It. Lot's of songs sound alike.

True, but I think with the Bar Kays, the influences are more "evident" and obvious lol They borrowed elements from other songs in a very blatant way.
